H. T. WELOH.
INHALER.
No. 406,118. Patented July 2, 1889.
U ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY T. WELCH, or SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA.
INHALER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,118, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed March '7, 1389.
$erial No. 302,310- (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY T. WELcH, of the city of SaoJos, in the county of Santa- Clara and State of California, have-invented the mucous membrane may be relieved or cured.
Referrin to the accom an in drawin s C b D 7 Figure 1 is a vertical section of my inhaler. Fig. 2 is a view showing the application of the inhaler. Fig. 3 is a perspective. view of the inhaler, showing the drawer B partially withdrawn. F r
A is a nose-covering, made of some flexible material stiff enough to retain its shape, and it may, if found necessary, be provided with a small stiffening-plate a across the bridge of the nose. The base of the nose-covering is entirely closed in by a stiff plate a, the back edge being curved to properly fit the upper lip. Upon this base-plate is formed a receptacle B, in which is placed the medicinal preparation, usually some absorbent materialsuch as felt-upon which a small quantity of the liquid is dropped. I prefer to make this receptacle B in the shape of a drawer, which is adapted to slide to its seat between the base-plate a and a top plate (t the latter being perforated to permit the fumes to rise. The little drawer may be readily withdrawn to be resup plied, and as readily put back. In the front and sides of the nose-covering, just above the top plate a are made a number of breathing-apertu res C, here shown in the form of eyelets.
D are strings or tapes secured to the nosecovering and adapted to be tied behind the head to hold the appliance in place.
The use of the inhaler is obvious. It is tied in place over the nose, and the fumes of the medicinal preparation rising enter the nostrils, and are inhaled with the air drawn in through the breathing-apertures.
The appliance may be conveniently Worn any length of time, and on account of its shape it is not in the way, nor is it very unsightly. It is not unduly aggravating, for the air is not drawn through the medicinal preparation, but over it, wherebyit becomes sufficiently impregnated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An inhaler consisting of a covering or casing fitted to the nose, the movable drawer seated in the base of the covering or casing below the nostrils and containing the medicinal preparation, and the breathing-apertures in the front and sides of the covering or casing above the drawer, whereby the air drawn in through said apertures is impregnated with the rising fumes from the medicinal preparation, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
H. T. WELOH. Witnesses:
AUGUSTUS SoHwALL, S. D. ANDERSON.
