Description

I. KELLY. PNEUMATIC PILLOW. APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 15, ms.
Patented Apr. 9,1918.
IDA. KELLY, OF WAGO, TEXAS.
PNEUMATIC PILLOW.
Specification a Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 9, 1918.
Application filed September 15, 1916. Serial No. 120,298.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mrs. IDA KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waco, in the county of McLennan and State of Texas, have invented certain useful Improvements in Pneumatic Pillows, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The lnvention relates to pillow attachments, and more articularly to the class of Ventilators for pi lows, or mattresses or the like.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a ventilator of this character wherein the same can be fastened within the pillow casing, 0 that air will be freely admitted thereto, and also can be exhausted therefrom, thereby rendering the pillow thoroughly sanitary when in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a ventilator of this character wherein the construction thereof is novel in form, so that the pillow casin and its contents can be thoroughly venti ated without possibility of the loss of any of the contents thereof and at the same time permitting the expulsion of dust and foreign matter from the contents of said pillow casing;
A further object of the invention is the provision of a ventilator of this character wherein the pillow will be rendered more fluffy, and less perceptible of distention, resulting from the trapping of air wlthin the casing thereof.
A still further object of the inventlon is the provision of an attachment of this character which is extremely simple in construction, readily and easily inserted in the casing of a pillow, or removed therefrom, strong, durable, thoroughly rellable, and efficient 1n its purpose, and inexpenslve in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended. I v In the accompanying draw1ngs: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pillow showing the ventilator constructed in accordance with the invention appliedthereto.
Fig.2 1s a fragmentary enlarged ver lcal sectional longitudinal view through the pillow and ventilator.
Fig; 3 is an enlarged detail view of the button hole end of the pillow casing.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout. the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 designates generally the pillow casing which may be made of any washable material, and of any desired shape, the same being provided with the opening 6 at one end. One
wall of the opening has mounted thereon buttons 7, while the other wall of said openng 6 is provided with button holes 8, and 1n this opening 6 is adapted to be movably inserted the ventilator hereinafter fully described.
The ventilator comprises an inner substantially thimble shaped member 9 having an enlarged end 10, in which is formed an; internally threaded socket 11, providing'a" seat for detachably receiving the externally threaded stem 12 of a flared mouthpiece 13, which forms anair inlet and outlet purpose presently described.
The thimble shaped member is formed I fora its wall with a plurality of apertures14,
providing air ports, while removably hjeld within the said seat in the socket 11-:is a
wire mesh disk 15, providinga screen which is held within said socket when is screwed therein.
The ventilator is mounted in the opening 6 in the pillow casing 5 in a manner as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawthe stem 12 ing, the opening 6 being restricted about the stem 12 of the mouth piece 13 by the engagement of the buttons 7 in the button ho es 8 thereby retaining the ventilator within the opening, and when the latter is in place, air will freely flow into the pillow casing 5, and also will be expelled therefrom for assuring thorough ventilation to the pillow, and especially its contents, as the contents thereof will be retained within the casing 5 as the screen 15 will block the expulsion of the contents when air is exhausted from the casing 5 of the pillow.
On the removal of the ventilator in event that the same becomes choked with dust or other foreign matter, the mouth piece 13 can be readily detached from the thimble member 9, to permit the convenient cleaning of said ventilator, and also it will be obvious that the pillow is rendered more fluify thereby assuring comfort to the user of the same.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction and maimer of operation of the ventilator in conjunction with the pillow casing will be clearly understood, and therefore, a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is 1. In a device of the kind described consisting of a pillow casing having a filling, all the sides of said casing being substantially closed except centrally of one edge.
where a slit is formed separating two sides of the casing, a thimble shaped member having an enlarged flange adapted to freely pass through the slit into said pillow casing, one of the separated sides of said pillow casing being provided with a pair of spaced apart button holes, and the other separated side being provided upon its inner face with a pair of buttons engaging said button holes so as to frictionally cause said separated sides to embrace the flange of said thimble and hold the same against displacement in one direction from said pillow casing, the flange of said thimble engaging the folded portions of the separated sides of said pillow casing, and a flared hollow piece connected to said thimble and having a portion engaging the outer face of said separated sides, said thimble being provided with a plurality of openings.
2. A filled pillow casing having two sides secured so as to form a permanently closed edge, said last named. edge being slit to provide a central opening so as to provide sepaarated side portions, a thimble having an enlarged flange insertible into said opening, a flared hollow mouthpiece projecting into said opening and being threaded into said thimble and having a shoulder, the shoulder of said mouthpiece and flange of said thimble engaging opposite faces of said separated side portions so as to be secured upon said pillow casing, said thimble being provided with perforations, inter-engageable fastening members carried by said separated side portions and adapted to cause said separated side portions to frictionally close around the flange of said thimble and hold the same against displacement from said openings, and a reticulated member interposed between said thimble and piece.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
