Description

M. BELL PROTECTOR Filed March 1. 1922 gjvwm roz 7736293623 i atented Apr. 1, 1924.
UNITED STATES MARY BELL, OF FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS.
PROTECTOR.
Application filed March 1, 1922.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARY BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Smith, in the county of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in a Protector, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to face protectors adapted to be worn by harbors, hairdressers, and the like, whereby to prevent small particles of hair being drawn into the lungs.
The invention has particular reference to a protector designed to cover the nose and mouth of the user, and which is simple in construction and readily applied or removed.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a protector of this character in which the parts may readilybe disassembled for cleaning, and which is very efficient in operation.
VJith these and other objects in view, as will be apparent from the description, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, taken in connection with the acconiipanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the protector;
Figure 2, an end elevation thereof;
Figure 3, a vertical section through Figure 1;
Figure 4, a vertical section through the outer end of the protector, showing the parts in disassembled relation;
Figure 5, a detail illustrating an air vent; and
Figure 6, an elevation illustrating the protector as applied.
In detail, the protector comprises a substantially cylindrical casing 1, formed of any suitable material, and so formed as to be positioned over the nose of the wearer, and carrying a perforated mouth covering portion 2 on the bottom thereof, and provided at its top with air vent caps At opposite sides of the protector I provide keepers i to which are attached the ends of a head strap 5, adapted to be positioned over the head of the wearer, as shown in Figure 6, whereby the protector will beheld in position.
The outer end of the casing 1 is cut away Serial No. 540,173.-
at suitable intervals to provide, in effect, a series of teeth 6 which will have a certain inherent resiliency, the spaces between the teeth forming the slots 7. The teeth extend sufficiently at the end of the casing to receive thereover an internally threaded cap 10, the teeth being correspondingly formed with threads for the purpose. The cap 10 is per forated as at 11, and between the cap and an internal perforated guard plate 9, is disposed a medicated sponge 8, annular in form and clamped between the cap and plate with portions extruded between the teeth into the slots 7 whereby it is held in position. The inherent resiliency of the teeth serves to bind the same against the inner perforated guard plate 9, to hold it frictionally in desired position.
It will thus be seen that I have provided two perforated guard members, which provide in effect screens to prevent the passage of small particles of hair and the like with the air which is breathed into the casing through the perforated end. Air is expelled from the casing through the vents 3 which, in this instance, comprise caps provided with perforations in their outer portions 13.
The device may be constructed of any suitable material and of any size desired, and while I have shown and described certain details entering into the construction and operation of the invention, I desire it to be understood that I do not limit myself to these, but that any such may be used as will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
1 claim:
A protector of the character described, comprising a substantially cylindrical casing adapted to cover the nose and mouth of a user, peripherally spaced teeth extending from the outer end of the casing, threads formed on said teeth, a perforated cap threaded over said teeth to close the outer end of the casing, a perforated inner guard plate frictionally held within the casing by said teeth in spaced relation from said cap, an annular medicated sponge retained in the casing between said cap and inner guard plate with portions thereof extruded into the spaces between said teeth, and means for securing said protector on the head of a user.
In testimony whereof I mix my signature.
MARY BELL.
