Be it known that l, @minfin O. SnnLiNn, a citizen of the United States of America7 and resident of Chicagov in the county of Cook and State of illinois7 have invented new and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to receptacles and more particularly to receptacles designed for use as sputum flasks orI cups.

One of the objects of the invention is to provide a flask which can be cheaply and readily constructed from a single piece of material.

@ther objects are to provide an improved receptacle which may be cut from a single piece of material so as to effect a greater economy in the material used. which has improved means for locking and holding the side portions in proj er folded and assembled rela-- tion, which is tight, which does not present projecting corners on the exterior thereof when folded, which may be readily folded into assembled position, and in which the corners adjacent a side may be folded and secured in place against opposite faces of the side.

Other objects and advantages will be ap parent from the following` description and the accompanying` drawings7 in which,-

rlhe receptacle may be formed from a single piece of paper or other suitable material which preferably has been water-proofed and may be stamped or otherwise out so as Vto assume substantially the form. of the blank shown in Fig. l. The blank is scored and folded along the lines indicated on they blanlnthe various parts assuming a position hereinafter to be more fully described when folded into proper relation to'form the receptacle.

The' receptacle comprises a bottom l, a back 2, sides 3 and 4, a front 5, rear corners 6 7 folded to .form a gusset between the Specification of Letters Patent.

sides 3-ll and back 2, and front corners 8 and 9 folded to form a gusset between the sides 3 1 and front 5, rl`he fold 9 of the front corner is provided with a tab l() which is adapted to be folded over the top edge of the other fold 8 of the corner when the corners are folded to form the gusset. The fold 6 of the rear corner is also provided with a projecting tab ll which is adapted to be folded over the edge of the other portion 7 of the rear corner, so as to hold the respective folds 6 7 in proper position when folded to form the gusset. A cover l2 is preferably formed integralwith the back A projecting flap comprising portions 13 and le extends from the fold 6 of the rear corner for a purpose which will hereinafter appear. lt is to be .noted that the tabs 1l, and the flap comprising the portions 13 and lei, are formed or cut from that portion of the rectangle adjacent the cover l2, which portion would ordinarily be wasted. Thus it is not necessary to cut into the body pattern of an adjacent blank in order to forni the locking flaps of the receptacle. The edge of the folds 89 of the front corners are preferably recessed or cut away to form shoulders 8&9 which cooperate with the flaps 13 to hold. the parts in proper relative position when the blank is folded to form the receptacle.

After the blank has been stamped or scored it may be folded so as to bring the parts into proper assembled relation to form the receptacle in substantially the following manner: The rear corners comprising the gussets 6 and 7 are folded so as to lie outside of the receptacle (Fig. 3) the flaps ll being folded over the edge of the gussets 7 so as to hold the parts 5 7 in close relation. The gussets 8-9 of the front corners are folded together so as to lie within the receptacle adjacent the sides Se thereof (Figs. 3 and l), and the tabs l() of the gusset 9 are folded over the upper edge of the gusset 8 so that the front corners are held in proper folded relation. ln this position. the sides 3 4 front 5 and back 2 are in an upright position. The rear folded corners are brought forward so as to lie close to the sides 3-4 and on the outer side thereof (Fig, 3). ln order to hold Ithe sides and the folded corners lying adjacent thereto and on opposite sides thereof in proper folded relation, the flap comprising the portions and 14 is employed. The flap 13 is folded over the top edges of the sides and the front inwardly folded corners, after which the portion i4; of' the flap is folded around and under he diagonally extending edge 1G of the front folded Corners SMQ.

1While one method of folding the blank has been set forth, it is understood that a blank of this character may be folded in other ways in order to form the receptacle. For enample, the relative position of the rear and front corners when folded may be reversed, so that the rear corners when folded, Would lie Within the receptacle and adjacent to the inner side, While the front corners when fold-- ed mav lie adjacent the outer face of the sides of the receptacle, in which case, the locking flap lS-ll Would be folded ontivardly over the top edge of the sides and under the front folded corner. lt is to be noted that the shoulders 9 heretofore mentioned interfit and cooperate With the locking flap 13 to hold the parts in proper folded relation. v

A blank as herein set forth may be economically manufactured and folded to form a receptacle Which securely maintains the parts in proper folded relation.

The receptacle may be carried in a holder, preferably having means for maintaining the cover closed. @ne form of holder is shown in my co-pending application filed on even date herewith.

lt is to be understood that the invention may have application to various other receptacles than to sputum flashs or cups. lhile one preferred embodiment has been shown and described, :it is to be construed in an illustrative and not in a limiting senso, as various changes and modifications may be made Without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

l claim:

il. A receptacle comprising a haar, front, sides, bottom, and front and rear folded corners, one of said corners being adapted to be folded Within the receptacle, and the other Without the receptacle, and means carried by one of the folded corners adapted to overlie the side and cooperate with the other folded corner for holding the parts in asse i bled folded relation.

2. A receptacle comprisin0` g a back, a front, a side and front and rear folding corners,

` means carried bv each of the folded corners holding the same in folded relation', and other means carried by one of the corners adapted to cooperate with the other corner for holding the corners in folded relation against opposite faces of the side,

3. ln a receptacle formed from a single piece of material, one side of said receptacle comprising a central portion and folded corner portions arranged on opposite sides of the central portion, one of said folded portions having a flap adapted to be folded over the edge of the central portion and nnder the other corner portion for holding` the portions in proper folded relation.

4l. receptacle formed of a single piece of material, one of Whose sides comprises a central portieri and folded corner portions arranged on opposite sides of said central portion, each of said folded corner portions having a tab folded over the upper edge thereof for holding the respective corners in proper folded relation, and a flap on one of said fol ded corner portions adapted to be folded over the central portion, and over and under the other folded corner portion, to hold the portions in proper folded relation.

5. A receptacle, one side of Which comprises a central portion and two corner portions folded on opposite sides of the central portion, means on one portion of each of the folded corners adapted to be folded over the other portion of the corner to hold the portions of said corner in folded relation, and means on one of the folded corners adapted to be folded over the edge of the centra-l portion and the folded corner on the opposite side of the central portion, and then under said 'folded corner on the opposite side of the central portion.

6. ln a receptacle, one side of which comprises a central portion and two corner por- .tions arranged on opposite sides of the central portion, means on one of the corner portions adapted to be folded over the edge of the central portion and the other corner portion, and then under said last named corner portion.

7. ln a receptacle, one side of Which comprises a central portion and folded corner portions arranged on opposite sides thereof,

each corner portion having a flap on the V outer fold thereof adapted to be folded. over the other fold of the corner so as to lie between said fold and the central portion to maintaii'i. the said folds .in close relation, means comprising a tab extending from the forward end of the outer fold of the corner adapted to be folded over the edge of the central portion and the other folded corner on the opposite side of the central portion, and then under said other corner so as to hold the parts in proper folded relation.

8. ln a receptacle, one side of which comprises central portion and corner portion arranged on opposite sides thereof, means for holding the central portion and the corner portions in proper folded position, said means comprising a flap extending from the end of one of the corners, said flap including two portions, one of Which is adapted lto be foldedbver the edge of the central portion and the corner on the opposite side thereof, and another portion adapted to be folded under said last-named corner.

9. A blank for a folded receptacle adapted to be formed from a single piece of material,

said blank including a side, a bottom, a back, a front, and folded `corners between the side and the back, and the side and the front, each of said corners comprising a plurality of gussets, one of the gnssets of each folded corner having a flap adapted to be folded over the edge of the other gusset of the folded Corner to hold the gussets in folded relation7 and a flap Carried by one of the gussets of one of the corners for cooperating With the other folded corner for holding the parts in proper folded relation when the bla-nk is folded to form the receptacle.

10. A blank for a folded receptacle having second day of front and bael; portions integrally connecting with the front and back edges of t-he bottom respectively, side portions integrally Connecting with the sides of the bottoni respectively, a cover integrally Connecting With the outer edge of the back and integraltabs on opposite sides of the cover portions, the tabs extending laterally a bottoni portion,

substantially no farther than the edges of side portions which constitute the upper edges of the sides of the folded receptacle.
