Description

ill
UNITED STATES Patented Aug. 13, 1935 PATENT j *IOF-FYI'JCEEV 3 Claims. (01. 206-44) Thisinvention relates to boxes and more especially to a folding box for use as the container for envelopes used in making weekly offerings to church, Sunday-school or other organization. Envelopes for such use are furnished in boxed sets-and may have serially printed on correspondingfaces successive weekly calendars. I
An object of this invention is to provide a foldable' envelope boxfhaving means for supporting the box in inclined position to permit utilization of the envelopes and box as a desk calendar.
According to this invention, the front wall of the body portion of the box is partially cut away to expose the top envelope of the set arranged within the box. The bottom of the body portion is closed by a bottom member hinged to the front Wall of the body portion and having a flap engageable with the rear wall. A cover member is hinged to the rear wall of the body portion and is divided by creases into four sections, the first of which overlies the top of the body portion, the second of which overlies the front wall of the body portion, the third of which underlies the bottom member and the fourth of which is an end flap insertable between the rear wall of the body portion and the bottom member fiap,'thus holding the cover in place. By folding the cover member rearwardly over the rear of the box and tucking the fourth and third sections between the bottom member flap and the rear wall of the body portion, the cover member is formed into a support for holding the body portion in inclined position with the front wall uppermost. The inclination of the body portion may be increased by providing a crease intermediate the top and bottom edges of the second section, thus making the horizontal and vertical supporting sections of the cover approximately equal.
Other objects, novel features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a body embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of such box filled with envelopes;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of an open box supported in inclined position;
Fig. 4 is a section substantially on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, and
Fig. 5 is a plan view of the blank for the box.
As shown in Fig. 5, the blank from which the box I0 is made up consists of a cut-out side portion ll connected by an end portion I 2 with a side portion I3, the side portion I3 being provided with a flap l4 which-is adapted to besecured bysuitable adhesive to the end portion I 5 joined to the side portion H. A bottom member !6 joins theside portion Hand is provided with a flap ll whilethe end portions I2-and 15 8.113 provided with flaps I8 and I9. The cover-member is-joined to-the side portion l3' and is divid-v ed by creases into four serially arrangedrsections 2B. 2!, 22 and 23of'which 23-is.an endflap;
When the blank is formed into a box, the flaps l8 and 59 are held up by the bottom member IS, the flap I! being engaged with the side I3 forming the rear wall of the body portion, the front wall being formed by the side portion II. The section 20 closes the top of the body portion while the section 2| overlies the front wall H and the section 22 underlies the bottom member [6, the flap 23 being inserted between the flap I! and the rear wall l3.
The cover member may be so arranged with respect to the body portion as to support the latter in inclined position with the wall H uppermost. This arrangement is accomplished by folding the cover member rearwardly over the wall l3 and inserting the flap 23 and also the section 22 between the flap I! and the wall I3, thus forming a support for the body portion, the support consisting of a horizontal portion and a vertical portion. Preferably the section 2l is scored and folded at 24, thus making the vertical portion of the sup-' port substantially equal to the horizontal port on. This arrangement results in a higher degree of inclination for the body portion than would be the case if the section 2! were not so scored.
Preferably, the side portion or wall is cut out to such extent that substantially the whole face of the top envelope is exposed. This makes it possible to read or observe any message or illustration that may be provided on the face of the envelope. The attention of the envelope user is thus more actively directed to the envelopes and obviates any possibility of overlooking any of the contribution days for which the envelopes are intended. Regular use of the envelopes is thus stimulated to the benefit of the organization by which they are supplied.
I claim:
1.. An envelope box comprising a body portion having front, back and side walls of fixed contour, a bottom member perpendicular to each of said wallsboth in open and closed position of the box, said bottom member having an upturned flap lying in juxtaposition to the back wall, a cover member hinged to the upper edge of said folded back over the body portion to form a support to hold the body portion with the bottom member in inclined position.
2. An envelope box comprising a body portion having front, back and side walls of fixed contour, a bottom member perpendicular to each of said walls both in open and closed position of the box, said bottom member having an upturned flap lying in juxtaposition to the back-wall, a cover member hinged to the top edge of said rear wall and having first, second and third scoring to provide a first, a second and a third section arranged to overlie respectively the top, front and bottom of said body portion, and an end flap shaped to be inserted into the body portion between said bottom member fiap and the rear wall, both with the cover overlying the top, front and bottom of said body portion and extending into the body portion up to the third scoring and with the cover folded over the back of said body portion in spaced relation thereto and extending into the body portion upto the second scoring to form from the first and second sections a support for holding the body portion with the bottom member in inclined position.
3. An envelope box comprising abo dy portion having front, back and side walls of fixed contour, a bottom member perpendicular to each of said walls both in open and closed position of the box, said bottom member having an upturned flap lying in juxtaposition to the back wall, a cover member hinged to the top edge of said rear wall and having first, second and third scoring to provide a first, a second and a third section arranged to overlie respectively the top, front and bottom of said body portion, and amend flap shaped to be inserted into the body portion between said bottom member flap and the rear wall, both with the cover overlying the top, front and bottom of said body portion and extending into the body portion up to the third scoring and with the cover folded over the back of said body portion in spaced relation thereto and extending into the body portion up to the second scoring to form from the first and second sections a support for holding the body portion with the bottom member in inclined position, said second section being additionally scored to arrange a por tion thereof substantially in alinement with said first section.
