Description

B. H. BROOKS.
Combined Hooks and Hasps. No. 141,691. y Patented August12,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN H. BROOKS, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED HOOKS AND HASPS.
Speciication forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,691, dated August 12, 1873 application filed This invention relates to an improvement.
in what are known to the trade as hook-haspsthat is to say, a hasp which has combined with it a hook which may be passed through the staple to temporarily secure it on the staple. This/has usually been done by pivoting a hook to the hasp to be turned into the staple when the hasp is placed thereon. The object of this invention is to form the device in one piece only-thatis, to dispense with the pivoted hook; and the invention consists in forming a projection or tongue upon one side ofthe slot, which will drop into the staple when the slot is passed over it.
A is the hasp, formed from any suitable ma terial, provided with a perforation, B, at one July 16,1873.
end, or other equivalent means by which it may be attached; C, the slot, of sufficient length to pass over the staple. In this slot, preferably upon both sides, I form a tongue or projection, a, leaving a space, d, between the two of sufficient Width to pass over the staple D, and the tongues of less width than the distance between the two edges of the staple. This completes the hasp.
The hasp is attached, as seen in Fig. 2, in the usual manner, and, when passed over the staple D, the tongue upon the upper side Will drop down into the staple, as seen in Fig. 2, and serve as a hook to temporarily secure the hasp.
By making a tongue upon opposite sides the hasp may be used either as right or left hand.
If a tongue be formed on one side then the hasps must be made right and left in order to be adapted to right and left hand uses.
I claim as my invention- The lxasp A, having a tongue, a, formed upon one or both sides ofthe slot C, substantially as and for the purpose described.
A BENJAMIN H. BROOKS.
