Box-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 479,416, dated July 26, 1892.
Application filed April 15, 1891. Serial No. 389,032. (No model.)
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that we, JOHN GEORGE GIEs- BERG and EDWARD SCHEULTZ, Jr., citizens of the United States, residing at Houston, in the county of Harris and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Cover-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in coverfasteners; and it has for its objects to produce a cover-fastener which will securely fasten the cover to a box, which will be simple, cheap, and effective.
VWith these objects in' view the invention resides in the various novel details of construction and in the combination of parts hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings in which We have illustrated our invention, and in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one end of a box provided with our device. Fig. 2 is 'a similar view of a box provided with another form of our device, and Fig. 3 is a View showing in detail the parts of the fastener of Fig. l removed from the box. Fig. 4; is a sectional View of the form shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 45 is a sectional view of the form shown in Fig. l.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a box, a receptacle, or the like, and B designates the cover therefor. The box A is provided with strips a at either end, and the cover Bis provided with depending strips b at either end which are adapted to fit down over the ends of the box upon the strips a. The cover B has extending downward from the strips b bolts'b, which have their bodies cut away near the ends to form necks b2. (See Figs. 4 and 5.) The strips a are provided with openings a', through which the bolts b may pass, and on their under sides the strips ct are provided with plates c, which form part of and are the bases upon which the fasteners O are built and secured to the strips a. As shown in Fig. l, the fastener O consists of the plates c, secured to the strip, as described, a slotted plate c,pivoted to said plate and having an extension c2, controlled by a guide-loop c3, which limits the movement of the said slotted plate c. The plate c is provided with an upturned piece c4, to serve as a thumb-piece. The plate c is perforated in order to permit the passage through it of the bolt b', and the plate c is also perforated at c5 for a similar purpose and is provided with a slot c5, which connects with said opening. When the bolt has passed through the perforation c5, it may be secured from being retracted by turning the plate c so that the neck b2 will be caught in the slot c6.
As shown in Fig. 2, the fastener consists of a plate c, perforated to permit of the passage of a bolt b and a plate c7, secured thereto by means of the loops cs, embracing the narrowed portions in such position that the plate may be reciprocated. This plate c7 is provided with a perforation o9, from which extends a slot 010. The operation of this form of the device is similar to that just described and is easily perceived from an inspection of the drawings. y
Vithboth forms of our device We use a locking-pin D. This pin D rests in an opening d, made in the strip a, and may be either spring-pressed or not, as is deemed most desirable, the pin being provided with a stop d to limit its downward movement and keep it in place. When not provided with a spring to press it downward, the pin is allowed to drop by gravity.
The operation of the pin in locking the device is simply by dropping in front of the upturned piece c4 whenever the neck b2 has been caught in the slot c6.
We may use our cover-fastener for a variety of purposes; but we prefer to use it as a boxfastener.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a cover-fastener, the combination of the base-plate provided with a perforation adapted for the reception of a bolt, a movable plate mounted on the base-plate and having a perforation and a slot connected with the same and having its movement limited by guides and provided with an outwardly-turned lug ca bolt provided with a neck, and a gravity locking-pin arranged in an opening of the base-plate and adapted to engage the lug c4, substantially as described.
