B. J. COHON.
ADVERTISING DEVICE- APPLICATION FILED OCT. 11, 1919.
Patented Apr. 25, 1922.

BENJAMIN J. COHON, OE WESTWOOD, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 UNITED CIGAR STORES COMPANY OF AMERICA, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION'OF'NEW JERSEY.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Application filed October 11, 1919. Serial No. 830,107.
To all whom it my concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN J. CoHoN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Westwood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following 1s a specification.
My invention relates to an advertising device. The object of my invention 1s to provide a simple and inexpensive device adapted to be attached to a window and to hold an article of merchandise, such as a cigarette package, so that it may be,viewed through the window to which the device is attached.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of the character described which will be very inexpensive to manufacture so that the device may be distributed in large quantities by large manufacturers or sellers of merchandise at very low cost.
Another object is to provide a'device of the character described which may be very easily blanked from a single piece of sheet material such as cardboard, and in knockdown form so that the device may be shipped flat and then be folded into. the desired form at the places of use without requiring gluing or pasting and which will be complete in itself as shipped.
In the drawing forming part of this application,
Figure 1 is a front view.
Figure 2 is a side view showing the article of merchandise in place.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective of the merchandise article holding shelf, and
Figure 4 is a' detail section of the article holding shelf.
The device is made of sheet material, preferably of cardboard, and the surface may be.
decorated by lithography or any other process, with any advertising matter corresponding with the character of merchandise to be displayed. I have shown the device blanked from a sheet 1 of cardboard of circular form, though the shape may be varied as desired. In the preferred form the sheet is cut through on the line 2, extending in the form of an are from the point .3 to-the point 4 and between these two latter points the card is scored or creased along the line 5 on which the central portion 6 is adapted to be bent back to a position substantively at right angles to the front or face portion 7. The substantially circular portion 7 is adapted t o-be attached 'to the window 8 by pasting, or gluing it directly thereto or in any other manner so that this portion lies face against the glass. The portion 7 is preferably, coated wlth glue or gum after it is lithographed so that it only requires moistening when it is applied to the window.
The portion 6 of the sheet is also scored along parallel lines 9, 10, at right angles to the line 5 and extending from the latter to the free edge 11 of the portion 6. Between the lines 9, 10 the blank is scored or creased along the line 12 a short distance from the line 5.
The sheet is also out along the lines 13 from the score lines 12; along the lines 14;
Patented A r. 25, 1922.
and along the lines 15 and 16, leaving a flap i 17 attached to the member 6 only along the hue 12,and across which a portion of the score lines 9, 10 extend. The blank is out along lines 18 to form the flaps 19.'
In setting up the device for display the member 6 is bent back away from the plane ofthe portion 7. The side flaps 20, 21 are also bent downwardly in relation to the intermediate portion 6 and the bottom edges 22 of these flaps then rest against the back of the member 7 and form stops which determine the angle or position of the article holding shelf 6. The member 17 is bent backwardly and downwardly so that the flaps 20, 21 engage in the slots 18 and the flaps 19 then look the flaps 20, 21 to prevent their spreading while the intermediate member 17 prevents the flaps 20, 21 from swinging further toward each other. In this way the flaps 19 and the intermediate member 17 form a lock for determining the positions of the flaps 20, 21.
When the device is thus set up, the member 6 lies at right angles to the member 7, the position being determined by the bottom ends 22 of the flaps 20, 21 resting against the member 7. There is a crosswise pocket or r thereon.
against the edges 15of the flaps 20, 21 and member 6; and the front may rest against the member 17. If the edges 14 and 15 are inclined in the -manner shown herein the cigarette box will be slightly inclined in relation to the window so that an interior top 1i ht may'refiect against the front surface of the box and show up all rinted matter In daytime the light will also tend to fall on the front surface of the box and light it better than if the box were standing perpendiculan g I prefer to make the present articleof one piece by blanking it out of a single piece of cardboard since this is the least expensive method. But whether it is so made or whether it is composed of separate pieces and assembled the device issimple and inexpensive,'and if shipped in fiat condition it is very compact.
I believe the present device is broadly new in that it comprises an article made of sheet stock adapted to be attached to a show window or the like and that it is adapted to hold an article of merchandise in position for display. I also believe it to be broadly new in that it embodiesthe last named features and that it can beblanked out of one Having claim is a a '1. A display device for windows made of horizontal position, said shelf member and said flaps having cut out portions adapted to receive an article of merchandise therein for display purpose.
2. A display device for sheet material and comprising a member adapted to be attached against a-window, a
-member adapted to be bent backwardly and downwardly from said first member to form a substantially horizontal shelf, and having flaps bent downwardly therefrom and forming stops to hold said shelf member in-substantially horizontal position, and a member bent downwardly from said shelf member and lying between said flaps and provided with flaps for locking said first flaps. Signed at the city, county and State of New York, this 23rd da of July, 1919.
