4 Claims, 6 Drawing Figures CIGARETTE rroLbEE BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION The invention is in the field of cigarette holders which are intended for outdoor use. More specifically, it relates to cigarette holders for golfers.
A smoking golfer often finds himself with a cigarette in hand when it becomes his time to play. Holding the cigarette in his mouth will interfere with his swing. Temporarily placing it on the grass, which is often done, is no solution since the grass is often wet or may carry toxic chemicals used in fertilizers or to kill weeds and fungus. Hand carts and electric carts are normally provided with cigarette holders. However, they are not always convenient to the golfer and many golfers prefer not to use carts so that some other type of holder is needed.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION Among the several objects of the invention may be noted the provision of a convenient, continually available means for a golfer to hold a partially smoked cigarette while playing the game, and the provision of such a means which is so inexpensive to manufacture that it is disposable and may be discarded after use. In general, this comprises a body provided with an opening for holding a lighted cigarette and having a surface provided with a pressure-sensitive adhesive suitable for temporarily securing the body to the golfers clothing, thus providing the golfer with a convenient device for holding his cigarette while playing golf. Other objects and features will be in part apparent and in part pointed out hereinafter.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS FIG. 1 is a perspective view of one form of the present invention;
FIG. 2 is a perspective showing a golfer having a cigarette holder of this invention secured to his trousers; and
FIGS. 3-6 are view similar to FIG. 1, showing alternate forms.
Corresponding reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS Referring to the drawings, FIG. 2 shows a cigarette holder 1 of this invention attached to a golfers trouser leg approximately midway between the knee and the hips below the right side pocket. Such positioning keeps the cigarette free of the golfers arms and club during his swing and conveniently locates the holder so that the cigarette may be deposited and retrieved with a minimum amount of effort. The apparatus may be made of various light-weight plastic materials formed in a plurality of geometric shapes which incorporate a means for holding a lighted cigarette and a surface of adequate holding area upon which is applied a pressure-sensitive adhesive suitable for temporarily attaching the cigarette holder to the users clothing.
One such cigarette holder, indicated in FIG. 1, is in the shape of a frustum ofa cone 3, having a base 5 to which is applied a pressure-sensitive adhesive 7a and a protective layer 7b which protects the adhesive surface but which can be stripped off without affecting the adhesiveness of the surface (the composite of the adhesive and protective layers is numbered 7). The base 5 is of sufficient area to form a good hold on the clothing of the user. A cylindrical opening 9 in the smaller end 10 of the frustum has a depth and diameter adapted for bolding the nonburning tip of a lighted cigarette 11 which is shown extending from the opening.
FIG. 3 shows a wedge-shaped form of the holder having two plane surfaces 13 and 15 converging to a lower edge 17, and a planar end surface 19. The adhesive and protective layer are applied to surface 13, which is again of an area sufficient to form a good bond between said adhesive and the clothing of the user. The end surface 19 has a cylindrical opening 9a adapted for holding a lighted cigarette 11. The axis of the opening 9a is angled away from the adhesive-coated surface 13 thereby holding the burning end of the cigarette at a sufficient distance so as not to burn the clothing.
FIG. 4 shows a disk-type holder comprising a disk 21, one plane surface 23 which bears said adhesive and protective layer 7 and is of area sufficient to form a good hold between said adhesive and the clothing of the user, and a tube 25 having a length and internal diameter adapted for holding a lighted cigarette 11. The tube 25 is preferably made integral with and perpendicular to the disk surface 27 which is parallel to the surface 23 containing the adhesive and protective layer 7.
Shown in FIG. 5 is a saddle-shaped cigarette holder comprising a rectangular sheet 29 curved to form a cylindrically concave surface 31 to which said adhesive and protective layer 7 are applied and which is of an area sufficient to form a good bond between said adhesive and the clothing of the user, and a fin 33 extending radially from the convex surface 35 of the curved sheetand made integral therewith. The fin 33 has a slot 37 adapted to hold a lighted cigarette.
FIG. 6 shows a modification of the FIG. 5 holder wherein the fin 33 is of reduced thickness at its juncture along a line with the curved sheet 29 in order to form a hinge 39. The hinge allows the flat sheet to swing in relation to the curved sheet which prevents the holder from being dislodged if, for example, the golfer brushes against a tree or bush.
Plastic cellular polymer foams are the preferred materials of construction for the geometric shapes indicated in FIGS. 2 and 3, while thermoplastics suitable for injection molding are the preferred material of construction for the shapes indicated in FIGS. 4, 5 and 6.
In view of the above, it will be seen that the several objects of the invention are achieved and other advantageous results attained.
As various changes could be made in the above constructions without departing from the scope of the invention, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
What is claimed is:
1. A cigarette holder for outdoor use comprising a body having a surface provided with a pressure-sensitive adhesive for adherence to the clothing of the user, said surface being of sufficient area for firm adherence of the holder to the clothing by the adhesive, and a protective layer covering said adhesive adapted to be stripped from the adhesive, said body having an opening therein for holding a lighted cigarette with the burning end of the cigarette spaced from the clothing, said opening being of cylindrical form extending from a surface other than the surface coated with said adhesive, the diameter and depth of the opening being adapted for holding a lighted cigarette, said body being in the shape of a frustum of a cone having two plane surfaces transverse to its axis, the smaller plane surface being larger in diameter than a cigarette and containing said opening for the cigarette, the large plane surface constituting the surface coated with adhesive for adherence to the clothing of the user, the height of the frustum being greater than the depth of said opening.
2. A cigarette holder for outdoor use comprising a body having a surface provided with a pressure-sensitive adhesive for adherence to the clothing of the user, said surface being of sufficient area for firm adherence of the holder to the clothing by the adhesive, and a protective layer covering said adhesive adapted to be stripped from the adhesive, said body having an opening therein for holding a lighted cigarette with the burning end of the cigarette spaced from the clothing, said opening being of cylindrical form extending from a surface other than the surface coated with said adhesive, the diameter and depth of the opening being adapted for holding a lighted cigarette, said body being of wedge shape having two surfaces converging to a lower edge and in end surface, one of said converging surfaces constituting the surface coated with adhesive for adherence to the clothing of the user, the end surface having said opening therein for holding a lighted cigarette with the burn- I ing end of the cigarette spaced from the clothing, said body comprising a curved sheet having a concave surface and a convex surface, the concave surface constituting the surface coated with adhesive for adherence to the clothing of the user, and a fin extending from the convex surface of the curved sheet, said cigarette holding opening comprising means defining a slot in said fin.
4. A cigarette holder as set forth in claim 3 wherein the fin along a line at its juncture with said curved sheet has a thickness less than that of the balance of said fin thereby allowing the fin to swing with respect to the curved sheet.
