Be it known that I, DOMENICO OALARCO, a subject of the King of Italy, residing at Burlington, in the county of Chittenden and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sounding Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to to s and has special reference to that class 0 toy known as sounding toys. More particularly the invention relates to a buzzer.

Toys somewhat similar to the present invention have been previously made but such toys have not been of attractive appearance.

One important object of the present invention is the roduction of a toy of this description wh ch will have an attractive appearance and which will thus induce chil dren and others to purchase the same.

In toys as previously constructed use has been made of a diaphragm to which a string is connected, the string being looped around the stick and being rosined at the point of contact with the stick. 7

A second important object of the invention is. to provide an improved toy of this class wherein the use of rosin will be unnecessary.

A third important object of the invention is to provide a toy of this class with improved means for holding the diaphragm in position.

With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and v Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the manner of using the toy, the form illustrated in this view being that of an aeroplane. I

One of the important features of all of the forms of which this toy is made is the form of body which is known as fusiform or stream-line and upon such a body as this Specification of Letters Patent.

can be built any number of attractive -deslgns such as aeroplane and dragon-fly herein shown as well as many others such as blrds, fish and a variety of objects not deemed necessary to be specifically illustrated or described since the body on which they are constructed is common to all and the invention is not limited to any specific ornamental features.

In each .of the forms used there is provided at about the center of gravity of the body a vertical wellor opening .11, the body itself being illustrated at 10. In the form shown in Figures 1 and 2 the upper part of this well 11 is a counter-sunk portion as at 12 and across the; lower portion in this counter-sink is stretched a diaphragm 13 which may be of any preferred material such as paper, parchment or the like but I have especially found that parchmentized rabbit skin is highly eflicient for the purpose. This thin diaphragm 13 is held in position by means of a suitable ring 14 covered by the wing member 15 of the aeroplane the latter having an opening 16 through which .the

diaphragm 13 is exposed.

Inthe form shown in Figures 3 and 4 the counter-sink is dispensed with and a diaphragm, 17 extends over the opening 11' and is secured to the sides of the body by any This form also is covered with a wing member 18 having an opening 19 therein through which said diaphragm is exposed.

As a result of my experiments in this line I have found that the most suitable material for the suspending means is horse-hair because with horse-hair it is not necessary to use any rosin to produce the desired result while with any form of string 9r twine rosin is essential. To secure the suspending means to the device I provide a pair of spaced opening 20 in'the diaphragm and through these openings there is passed the horse-hair 21. horse-hair 21 may be looped around the stick In using the invention it is merely necessary to moisten the horse-hair, as with saliva at its point of engagement with the wand 22 and then swing the toy around the wand. This will cause a loud humming noise due to the vibration of the diaphragm.

There has thus been provided a simple and efiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.

' It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. It is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is

1. In a toy of the class described, a fusiupper end, a vibratory diaphragm stretched across the lower part of the opening within the counter-sink, a retaining ring engaging the upper surface of the diaphragm periphorally, and suspension and operating means connected to said diaphragm.
