BALL FILING AND CATCI-IER.
Application filed December 20, 1922. Serial No. (508,007.
This'invention relates to a ball fling and catcher. Its object is the production of a device for playing ball by means of which a ball can be easily flung or caught. A second object of the device is to be enabled to fling a ball therefrom in a predetermined direction. A third object of the invention is the production of a device which can be used as a megaphone.
The organization of the invention comprises a cone shaped receptacle, with the large and outlet end thereof extended. A pair of wings are formed with the said extended end and a spring is suspended in the receptacle which supports the ball used with the device.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 represents an elevation of the ball fling and catchergFig. 2 shows a section of Fig. 1 on the line 2, 2 and Fig. 3 is a top plan view of Fig. 1.
The ball fling and catcher comprises a hollow cone shaped body portion designated in its entirety by the letter A which in this exemplification is made of one piece of ma terial. The longitudinal edges and 21 of the said piece of material are connected by the fasteners 22. The rear wall 25 of the said body portion extends beyond the front wall 26 thereof and forms the rear extension 27 with the side wings 28 at the enlarged inlet end of the catcher. The said extension 27 forms with the rear wall 25 a stra ght runway. A spring 30 is indicated with the curved rest 51 at its lower end, which faces the large end of said body portion, and its upper end 32 is fastened to the front wall 26 by means of the fastener 33 formed Iltll the spring. A ball 35 is indicated in the catcher, bearing on the curved seat 31 of the spring 30 and also against the inner face of the rear wall 25.
To play ball with the device, the ball 35 may be located there n, seated in the seat 31 of the spring 30 as indicated in the drawings. The player grasps the lower end of the device and swings it to discharge tl e said ball. The discharge of the ball will be augmented and directed along a straight line on the rear wall 25 and extension 27, by tension of the spring 30. The direct on of the ball will be on a line of the rear wall 25 and extension 27 which is in the plane of the longitudinal axis of the catcher. A second player with a similar ball fling and catcher, catches the ball discharged from the first device. The ball is caught by the second device by impinging against the extension 27 between the wings 28 and drops to the seat 31 of the spring 30. The user may speak through the device and use it as a megaphone.
The spring 30 prevents the ball 85 becoming tightly locked in the body portion A and maintains it loosely supported between its inner face and the inner face of the cone.
Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:
In a ball fling and catcher the combination of a hollow cone shaped body portion with a rear wall at the enlarged end thereof extended to form a rear extension, sa d extension having wings at the sides thereof and a spring having a curved seat at its bottom end facing the large end of said body portion with its top end fastened to the inner face of said body portion.
Signed at the borough of Manhattan. city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York this 1st day of December A. D. 1922.
PHILIP M. KAISER.
