Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 31, 1918.
Application filedrebruary 15, 1917, Serial No. 148,724. Renewed August 12, 1918. Serial No. 249,569.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LELIA MAY.FELLOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dolls, and the object thereof is to provide a double-figure doll, that is, a doll which utilizes both sides for front views. By such construction each side may represent a different character.
.My invention obviously doubles the amount of amusement and entertainment which a child may secure from a doll, as well as adds to the amusement and entertaining character by reason of permitting two different figures to be used in one doll.
By way of illustration. of my invention, I have shown it embodied in a rag doll although I do not consider my invention restricted to this form.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a front or rear elevation, the front and rear being interchangeable.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and
Fig. 3 is the other front or rear elevation.
The doll is herein illustrated as representing on one side Little Red Riding Hood and on the other side the wolf, characters in a well known nursery story. The doll is made up of two pieces of cloth suitably marked and stuffed withany suitable material to fill out the form.
The figure of the wolf is printed or otherwise suitably marked upon a piece of cloth 4, and the latter is cut to exactly match another piece 5 upon which the figure of Little Red Riding Hood is marked. The pieces 4: and 5 are then secured together at the edges. This may be done by turning the pieces of cloth with the printed sides face-to-face and then sewing along the edge almost entirely leaving sufiicient opening so that the article may be turned inside out. The article is then turned inside out, thereby exposing the printed or marked sides of the doll. The doll may then be stuffed with any suitable material, such as cotton to fill out the figure. If desired, a noise producing instrument may be placed therein. The opening which remains is then sewed up, completing the doll. Any other method of sewing the two pieces of cloth together may be used, as the essential feature of the invention is the two front faces which are back-to-back.
It is also within the scope of my invention to construct the doll of papier-mach or any other material which may be found suitable or convenient for use.
The figures which may be imprinted upon the two sides of the doll may be varied, such as the front view of an animal figure upon one side and a front view of a human figure upon the other. The particular representations, however, of the characters are not the feature of my invention, but are merely cited to show the utility of the constructlon.
What I claim is:
As a new article of manufacture, a doll construction, comprising a single member consisting of a body having a head, a single pair of arms and legs projecting from said body, the head of said doll having two faces representing different characters, both faces being always exposed to view, the front and rear faces of said doll being clothed differently to represent dolls of diflerent characters.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 9th day of February, 1917.
LELIA MAY FELLOM.
