Abstract

A doll combination including a doll body with a torso having arms, legs and a head attached thereto. Clothing is provided for the doll body. The doll body is fabricated of soft stuffing material which is enclosed by a fabric cover. The doll body is dimensioned so as to have height and width but very small depth thereby giving the appearance of a substantially two-dimensional figure such as a paper doll, or the like, but having considerably more stability and positionability.

1 Claim, 4 Drawing Figures FLAT STUFFED DOLL AND CLOTHING COMBINATION BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION 1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates generally to dolls.

2. Brief Description of the Prior Art Dolls, and especially dolls in which a child can dress have enjoyed a great deal of popularity throughout the years. Three-dimensional clothes dolls which include a doll body with a torso having arms, legs and a head attached thereto, are relatively difficult to manufacture, difficult to store, more expensive, and more difficult to make clothes for than a two-dimensional doll, such as a paper doll. A two-dimensional doll, such as a paper doll, has the disadvantage of being relatively flimsy, unstable, non-poseable and unattractive.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The principal object of the present invention is to provide a generally two-dimensional doll which is easy to store, easy to manufacture, easy to make clothes for, relatively stable, poseable and having greater attractiveness than other types of two-dimensional dolls.

These and other objects of the invention are accomplished by one embodiment currently contemplated which provides for a doll combination which includes a doll body with a torso having arms, legs and a head attached thereto and clothes to fit on the doll body. The improvement in this doll resides in the use of soft stuffing material which is enclosed by a fabric cover and dimensional so that the doll body has height and width but a very small depth thereby giving the appearance of a two-dimensional figure which is easy to dress and facilitates a child making his own clothing therefor. The legs are movable with respect to the torso so that the doll body is self supporting in a standing position when the legs are spaced from each other.

Also included in the doll combination are substantially flat clothes which are easily made and which can be hung on the above described doll body.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENT The doll combination of the present invention is shown as comprising a doll body, generally designated 10, (see FIGS. 1, 2 and 3) and articles of clothing, 12, one of which is illustrated in FIG. 4. Turning now to FIGS. 1 and 2 in greater detail, the doll body generally includes a torso portion 14 having a head 16, arms 18 and legs 20 attached thereto.

Turning to FIG. 3, it can be seen that the doll body is stuffed with a soft material 22 such as cotton, foam material, or the like, which is enclosed by a fabric cover 24. As best seen in FIGS. 2 and 3, the amount of stuffing 22 and the dimensions of the fabric cover 24 for the doll body 10 are such that the doll has relatively substantial height and width but relatively small depth. This gives the general appearance of a two-dimensional figure on which clothing is easily hung. The fabric cover 24 is sewn together along the periphery of the doll, as at 25a (FIG. 3) which, as can be appreciated, makes the manufacture of the doll very simple and inexpensive. Stitching or binding 25b (FIG. 3) also provides curvature for the doll body.

Turning to FIG. 2, certain articles of clothing can be printed on the fabric cover 24. In particular, in the present embodiment, underwear 26 is printed on the torso l4 and shoes 28 are printed on enlarged feet portions at the bottom of the legs 20. Alternatively, the underwear 26 and shoes 28 can be sewn on the doll body by using a different colored material.

Unlike prior two-dimensional dolls, such as paper dolls, the doll of the present invention has a certain degree of poseability and considerably more stability. As best shown in FIG. 1, when legs 20 are spaced from each other, the doll body 10 is self-supporting in a standing position on a suitable surface.

Because the doll body 10 is substantially flat, clothes 12, such as that shown in FIG. 4, is easy to make and to fit on the body. The article of clothing 12 shown in FIG. 4 has two openings 30 (only one shown) through which the arms 18 are adapted to be received. A tie ribbon 32 is adapted to be tied around the dolls neck 34. Clothing such as that illustrated in FIG. 4 can be made from paper or fabric and can either be preprinted with a colored design or with blank outlines to be either colored in or creatively designed by a child. It is even possible for a child to make his own articles of clothing out of paper or fabric for the doll of the present invention.

The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only and no unnecessary limitations should be understood therefrom as some modifications will be obvious to those skilled in the art.

I claim:

1. A flat stuffed doll and clothing combination comprising:

a three-dimensional doll body including a generally flat torso made from soft material enclosed by a fabric cover, the torso being dimensioned so as to have a relatively substantial height and width but relatively small depth giving the appearance of a two-dimensional figure;

generally flat arms and legs connected to said torso and made from soft stuffing material enclosed by a fabric cover with the arms and legs having height and width but relatively small depth, said legs having feet formed at the bottom thereof extending laterally outwardly of the legs at a width greater than the remainder of the leg, said legs being movable with respect to said torso in a front-to-rear direction and having sufficient rigidity so that the doll is self-supporting in a standing position on said feet when said legs are spaced in said front-to-rear direction from each other; and

substantially fiat clothes adapted to fit on said body and enclose said torso.

Claims

1. A flat stuffed doll and clothing combination comprising: a three-dimensional doll body including a generally flat torso made from soft material enclosed by a fabric cover, the torso being dimensioned so as to have a relatively substantial height and width but relatively small depth giving the appearance of a two-dimensional figure; generally flat arms and legs connected to said torso and made from soft stuffing material enclosed by a fabric cover with the arms and legs having height and width but relatively small depth, said legs having feet formed at the bottom thereof extending laterally outwardly of the legs at a width greater than the remainder of the leg, said legs being movable with respect to said torso in a front-to-rear direction and having sufficient rigidity so that the doll is self-supporting in a standing position on said feet when said legs are spaced in said front-to-rear direction from each other; and substantially flat clothes adapted to fit on said body and enclose said torso.
