LEG- CONSTRUCTION.
o ave.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, HERBERT J. GWYER, a citizen of' the United States of America, residing at Yonkers, l/Vestchester county, New York, have invented a new and useful Leg Construction, of which the followingis a specification.
l y invention relates to a leg construction and is particularly adapted for supporting a refrigeratoror other cabinet.
it is an object of my invention to provide a construction whereby the legs may be simultaneously properly positioned to receive and support the cabinet.
It is a further object of my invention to provide a construction whereby the legs as a unit may be compactly folded for shipment or storage, and in general it is the object to provide a very convenient, serviceable and cheap construction of the class indicated.
Other objects will appear as the specification proceeds.
My invention in its preferred form comprises a pair of bars pivoted to each other and adapted to be folded for storage and shipment orextended when in use. Upon each end of each bar is mounted a supporting leg. .Each leg may be pivotally supported on the bar if desired. The bars may also be provided with hinge joints to permit the legs to be folded compactly against the bars.
In the drawings which show merely preferred forms of my invention,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a leg construction embodying features of my invention and showing in dot and dash lines a refrigerator cabinet supported thereon.
Fig. 2 is a top lan view of the construction shown in *ig. 1, showing in full lines the bars folded together, and in dot and dash lines, the bars extended.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the legs shown in Fig. 1, and showing an apron supported therefrom.
Fig. 4 is a detail view showing a leg and a bar having a hinge joint therein.
Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of a modified form of leg proper.
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail view showing the bar adjustable longitudinally.
In said drawings, 1 and 2 indicate a pair of bars pivoted together at 3. Upon each end of each bar is mounted a leg Each leg is preferably pivotally mounted upon Specification of Letters Patent. Patented D3 2'3, 1921 Application filed July 26,
1920. Serial No. 398,976.
the bar as at 5. If desired, suitable braces such as 6 may be provided between the bar and leg for providing additional rigidity.
Each leg in the form shown in Figs. 1 to at comprises a substantiallyangula-r section 7. Secured to or integral with each leg is a support 8 shown in the form of a flange.
The support is preferably somewhat removed from the top of the leg in order to provide in effect an upstanding flange 9 for laterally positioning the cabinet.
In order to adapt the construction to cabi-.
nets of various sizes, I prefer tomake each bar adjustable longitudinally as shown in Fig. 6. Each bar will be divided at proper points and the ends may be provided with ears 10-10 which extend from the ends 'of the bar adjacent the division points and extend or lap overthe section of the bar adjacent thereto. Two such adjustable connections or joints will preferably be pro vided in each bar, one upon each side of the pivot 3. It will be obvious that such an adjustment will adapt the device for use with cabinets of various sizes.
In order to save space in shipment each bar may be provided adjacent the legs with a hinge joint such as 11 (see Fig. 4:). By reason of this hinge joint 11, the leg 4 may be folded up upon the body of the bar as shown in dotted lines, and the leg will fit leg is likewise of generally angular shape and is provided with a flange 12 for supporting the cabinet. A second flange 13 may be provided for supporting any suitable type of caster such as 14. It will be obvious that the legs shown in Figs. 1 to 4 may also be provided with suitable casters if desired.
In each leg, an aperture such as 14 has been shown for securing the legs to the cabinet. v
In use, the leg construction or unit such as shown in full lines in Fig. 2 is placed upon the floor and the bars separated or extended to the desired position, after which the cabinet may be placed upon the legs and secured thereto. It will be noted that by reason of the adjustability of the bars and the pivotal connections of the legs to the bars, that cabinets of a wide range of sizes may be accommodated. The leg construction such as l have shown may be very compactly and easily folded and packed for maybe easily applied to the legs by first separating the latter and inserting the pin on one leg into one eye and then adjusting the other leg so as to engage the other pin with its corresponding eye. This apron may be cheaply made and presents a very neat appearance.
7 While I have described in some detail specific embodiments oi my invention, 1 wish it to be understood that various modifications and changes may be made, all coming within the scope of the appended claims.
1. In a construction of the character described pair of longitudinally adjustable bars pivoted to each other, a supporting leg pivotally mounted upon each end of each bar whereby the legs may be simultaneously poasuo ortin lee mounted noon each end l l c L; L
of each bar, each of said bars having a hinge joint therein whereby the bars may be folded together and the legs folded upon th bars.
3. In a construction of the character described, a pair of bars pivotally connected to. each. other, legs mounted on the ends of said bars, an apron, means foriconnecting said apron to two oi said legs, said apron being detachable from said legs by a folding of said bars andconsequent variation in the distance between said last mentioned legs.
l. In a construction of the character described, a pair of bars, legs mounted on the ends of said bars, and an apron pivotally connected to and between two of saidlegs,
said apron being detachable from said legs by a folding ofsaid'bars-and consequent separation of said legs.
