Specification of Letters Patent.
0 Application filed Hatch 9, 1818. Serial No.281fi08.
' To all whom it may. concern:
Be it kIlOWIl that I, Ronn'nr M. Russnm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the count of Kings and State of New York, have in .ented a new and Improved Patients Back and Head Rest, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to back and head rests especially adapted for patients, although it may be used by others to support the back or head at any angle of inclination while the patient is lying on a bed or cot.
The invention has for its general objects to improve the construction of a device of this character so as to be easily folded or unfolded, adjusted to difierent' positions, durable and substantial in construction, and thoroughly sanitary. f v
A more specific object of the invention is the provision of a rest having a novel arrangement of back and head sections and prop means therefor, whereby the sections can be adjusted at any desired inclination to each other and to the bed.
With such objects in view and others which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises various novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be set forth with particu-- larity in the following description and claims appended hereto.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention and wherein similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device set up on a cot and showing it in use;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device whden folded for carrying or storing away; an
Fig. 3is an enlarged sectional view of the device set up as shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, A and B designate the back and head sections of the rest, each of which comprises a plate of metal 1 and a marginal frame 2, and the sections are connected together by hinges 3, whereby the head-rest section will fold down over in frontof'the back-rest section A. A supporting leg G in the form of a frame is connected by hinges 4 to the upper edge of the back-rest section A, and the frame or prop C includes a plurality of cross-bars or rungs 5 for engagement by brace bars 6 and angles of 7 connected with the sections A and B, respectively, to support the latter at difierent.

inclination. The brace. bar 6 is hmiedly connected at '8 with the lower edge bar 6 with the prop C, the section A can be supported at any angle desired. The brace bar 7 has its upper'end hingedly connected at 10 with the top edge of the section B, and extends downwardly toward the prop C, there being a plurality of notches 11 in the bar 7 to engage the u per rung 5, whereby. the head-rest section can be adjusted to dlfierent positions. The weight of the bar 6 maintains it engaged with its respective rung 5, whereas the leaf spring 12 on the section B engages the brace bar 7 to assist in maintaining it in engagement with its respective rung 5. To permit the back folding, the brace bars are each made of sections a and- 6 connected by a knuckle joint The hinge 4 is so applied that the prop C folds down against the rear side of the section A, with the folded brace rod 6 lying between the prop G and the section A. The upper brace rod 7 when folded is held in position by means of a pivoted catch it on the section B.
For convenience in transporting the device, a U-shaped handle 15 is slidably mounted in the top part of the frame 2 of the section A, so that it can be adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 2 when the folded device is to be transported. The entire construction is preferably made of metal and enameled or otherwise finished so as to be sanitary. Y
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and Bod method of operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation, together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment, thereof, I desire to have it understood that the deviceshown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made when desired as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, 1
its
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device of the class described comprising a back-rest section of plate-like form, a
head-rest section, a prop, brace members between the said sections and prop, and hinges connecting the prop and head-rest section tothe back-rest section, with the head-rest section and prop foldable down against the opposite sides of the head-rest section, the
axes of the hinges being located respectively to the front and rear of the back-rest section.
' 2. A device of the class described compris-' ing a back-rest section of plate-like form, a head-rest section, a prop, brace members between the said sections and prop, hinges connecting the prop and head-rest section to the back-rest section, with the head-rest section and prop foldable down against the opposite sides of the head-rest section, hinges connecting the brace members with the head and back-rest sections at points remote from the hinge between them, and means for adjustably connecting the brace members with the prop, the axes of the hinges being located respectively to the front and rear of the back-rest section.
3. A device of the classdescribed comprismg a back-rest section, a headrest section,
restore tions and prop, hinges connecting the prop and head-rest section to the back-rest sectlon, with the head-rest sectionand prop ,f0ldable down against the opposite sides of each other from a common plane, a frame hingedly connected with the back-rest section and having a plurality of rungs, a brace member between the top portion of the headrest section and the upper rung of the said frame, to permit the head-rest section to be adjusted to difierent angles, and a brace member connected with the lower portion of the back-rest section and adjustably engaged with the lower rung of the frame for supporting the back-rest section at difi'erent angles. v
