IMPROVEMENT IN NECK-TIE SUPPORTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 140,049, dated June 17, 1873; application filed May 15, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. This invention consists in the arrangement of a sliding hook on the shield, which serves to support a neck-tie, said hook being fitted ina guide that is fastened to the shield in such a manner that in putting on the neck-tie the hook can be moved out on its guide; and

then, by pushing said hook back, the necktie can be readily adjusted in the required position, the hook being retained in the required position by the friction in its guide.

In the drawing, the letter A designates a shield, which is intended to support a scarf, butterfly, or other device of a similar nature. On this shield is secured a tube, a,wh1ch forms the guide for the shank of a hook, b, said shank being bent up at its outer end to prevent it from being drawn out of its guide-tube. The hook I) is intended to catch over the neck-band of the shirt, and it is fitted in its guide-tube in such a manner that the friction of said tube on the shank of the hook will retain the same in any position into which it may be brought.

The tube a is made of sheet metal or any other suitable material, and it is, by preference, constructed with spurs, which can be passed through holes in the shield and clinched, so that they serve to fasten said tube in position. If desired, however, the tube may be secured on the shield by any other means suitable for the purpose.

When the neck-tie is to be put on, the hook I) is pushed up as far as it will go, and it is made to catch over the neck-band of the shirt. The wings of the shield are then forced under the flaps ot' the collar; and, finally, the shield is pushed up on the shank of the hook, and thereby the neck-tie is adjusted in the required position, and at the same time the hook is completely concealed.

By means of my sliding hook the operation of putting on a neck-tie and of adjusting it in the desired position is materially facilitated; and, furthermore, my sliding hook is readily attached to the shield, and it is not liable to become detached by the frequent operation of putting on or taking off the neck-tie.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with a neck-tie shield, the metal guide a and sliding hook b, substantially as and for the purpose described.-
