IMPROVEMENT lN SHANK-LASTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 138,926, dated May 13, 1873; application filed April 5, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD B. PERKINS, of Almond, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved. Shank-Laster, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved shanklaster, as applied, for pegging a boot; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, on the line C (J, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of my invention is to construct a shank-laster, which may be adjusted to different sizes of boots, holding the shanks firmly, and allowing the use of both hands in pegging. The work is thereby accomplished quicker and easier. My invention consists of a curved main piece, with pinchers, guard, and regula- The curved lever is placed under the knee, the pressure on guard and pinchers stretching firmly the shank-leather for pegging.
In the drawing, A represents the curved main piece, having lever end a, body I), and curved pincher end d. It may be made of steel or other suitable material. The corresponding pincher end B has an extension arm 0 passing through a slotted recess of main piece A, and turning on pivot e. The pincher ends open only so far as required to take hold easily of the leather to be stretched. A guard-wheel, D, having segmental flange f, is pivoted at 1 to arm 0, at a point near its periphery opposite flange f. A perforated curved bridge g connects diametrically the rim of wheel D, a pin, h, of spring-lever E fitting into the holes. Spring-lever E is pivoted to projecting lugs t of arm (3, having a spiral spring k at the end nearest the main piece A, pin 70 at the other end passing through a perforation of arm 0 to those of bridge g. Guardwheel D may thereby be adjusted to difierent sizes of boots, from the smallest to the largest. The boots are placed on the last, with a lasting-post therein the pinchers take hold of the leather of the shank by the pressure of the knee on the curved lever end a communicated to guard-wheel D, leaving both hands free to peg the shank-leather.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The curved lever A, in combination with pincher end. B having arm 0, with springlever E, substantially as described.
2. Guard-wheel D having flange f connectscribed.
RICHARD B. PERKINS.
