DEVICE FOR LEVELING HORSES FEET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 602,952, dated April 26, 1898.
Application filed July 23, 1897. Serial No. ($5,662. (N model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. MILLETT, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Livermore Falls, in the county of Androscoggin and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Leveling Horses Feet, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention consists of an improved device for leveling horses feet; and the object thereof is to provide a device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may be fastened to the foot of the horse, thus making it comparatively easy to level the foot.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvedde vice for leveling a horses foot; Fig. 2, a sec tional side view thereof; Fig. 3, a rear View thereof, and Fig. 4 a partial section on the line a 4: of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention I provide a device for the purpose herein specified which comprises a frame or shoe which is of the general form of an ordinary horseshoe and which consists of two similar side pieces 5, which are provided with circular heads 6, one of which is countersunk in the other and through which is passed a pivot screw or bolt 7.
The pivotal connection of the separate parts 5 is made at what is known as the toe of the shoe, and the sides are curved outwardly and inwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. Pivoted in the end of one of said sides, as shown at 8, is a cross-bar 9, provided with a longitudinal slot 10, and said cross-bar passes through the opposite side, as shown at 11, and the bar 9 is free to swing on its pivotal connection at 8 and is also capable of slight lateral movement in the opening 11, and the front side thereof is provided with ratchetteeth 12, and the side 5 of the shoe or frame in which the opening 11 is formed is provided with a longitudinal slot 18, which communicates therewith, and pivoted in said slot is a curved lever 14, provided with a camshaped head 15, through which is eccentrically passed a pivot-pin 16, and mounted on the cam-head 15 in the slot 13 is a ratchetblock 1'7, which is adapted to engage with the ratchet-teeth 12 on the bar 9. I also provide a bar 18, which is arranged centrally of the shoe or frame and the head of which is placed between the jaws 6 of the separate sides 5 of said shoe or frame, and the pivot screw or bolt 7 passes therethrough, as shown at 19, and the said bar 18 projects backwardly over the pivoted bar 9 and is provided at its rear end with a longitudinal slot 20, and passing upwardly through the slot 10 in the bar 9, and through the slot 20 in the bar 18, is a bolt 21, which is provided on the upper end thereof with a nut or bur 22, and the lower end of said bolt is provided with a milled head 23, as shown in Fig. 3, and the nut or bur is countersunk in the end of the bar 18, and said bolt or screw 21 is adapted to be operated by means of the milled head 23 thereof, so as to securely clamp the bar 18 to the bar 9 in any desired position, and by loosening said bolt by means of said milled head said bars 9 and 18 may be moved one upon the other and the bar 18 may be moved longitudinally of the bar 9.
The end of the bar 18 through which the pivot screw or bolt 7 passes is provided with an upwardly-curved extension or shank 24, as shown in Fig. 2, on which are formed two circular jaws 25, which are best shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and pivotally connected with said jaws, by means of a bolt 26, is a quadrant gage or frame 27, and one of the jaws 25 is provided with a pointer 28, which is secured thereto or formed thereon and which is adapted to move over the segmental scaleplate 29 of the quadrant gage or frame 27, and the inner side of said quadrantgage or frame is projected to form an arm 30, the end of which is curved outwardly or forwardly, as shown at 31, and the said inner side of the quadrant gage or frame 27 is also provided with a scale, as shown at 32, which extends along the extension 30 thereof.
The separate sides 5 of the frame or shoe are each also provided about the middle thereof with upwardly and inwardly directed jaws I or clamps 33, which are formed on or secured to the outer edge of said sides, and the bolt 26, which connects the quadrant gage or frame with the jaws 25, is provided with a thumbnut 3i, by means of which said quadrant gage or frame may be set at any desired point.
My improved foot-leveler may be attached to any size foot, and the central bar 18 is so arranged that when the front end thereof is placed in the center of the toe of the,,foot the other end is in the center of the frog of the foot and the quadrantor scale-frame 27 at the a front of the footwith the side on which the extension 30 is formed extending backwardly over the vertical center of the hoof and in line i with the vertical center of the ankle-joint.
The quadrant gage or frame 27 may be held at any desired point by the thumb-nut 34, and in practice the jaws 25, between which the quadrant gage or frame 27 is mounted, are made thin enough to afford spring action necessary to accomplish this result.
The clamping arrangement is also an improvement of m uch importance, and by means thereof the device can beadjusted to a foot of any desired size, and said device may be quickly and easily removed by throwing the small lever 14 outwardly, it being understood that the pivoted bar 9, which is pivoted to one side of the shoe or frame, is freeto move transversely through the opposite side and longitudinally thereof to a certain extent; but secured in the slot 13 is a transverse pin 35, which is adapted to limit the forward movement of the bar 9 in the slot 13, and the nut or bur 22 is also adapted to slide in a groove in the bar 18.
My improvement is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, and it will be apparent that changes in and modifications of the construction herein described maybe made without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A device for leveling horses feet, said device consisting of a shoe-shaped frame consisting of two parts, pivotally connected at the toe, by means of a pivot screw or bolt, one of said parts being provided at the heel of the frame with a pivoted cross-bar which passes through a slot in the opposite part, and which is provided with a longitudinal slot, and at the front edge thereof with ratchet-teeth, a cam-lever mounted in the slot through which the said pivoted bar passes, and provided with a ratchet-block which operates in connection with said bar, a longitudinal bar which is held in place by said pivot screw or bolt, at the front end of the frame, and the rear end of which is provided with a slot a pin or bolt passing through said slot and through the slot in the said cross-bar, said longitudinal bar being provided at its forward end with upwardly-curved jaws in which is pivoted a quadrant gage or frame, and said separate parts of the frame being provided at their outer sides with clamps orj aws, substantiallly as shown and described.
