Description
oooooooo BBBB KS IIIIIIIII E.
k I Q m Wmsses' I j W Mum UNITED STATES ARTHUR K. HATIIAXVAY,
BLACKSMIITHS VISE.
PATENT OFFICE.
OF AXTELL, NEBRASKA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,348, dated February 10, 1891.
Application filed April 19, 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR K. HATHAWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at AX- tell, in the county of Kearney and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin BlacksmithsVises; and
1 do declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The special object of the invention is to make a blacksmiths foot-power vise specially adapted for use in welding a steel lay on the landside of aplow, the landside being properly held by the vise while the smith is making the weld.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a plan view of my vise provided with the treadle mechanism which I use, and Fig. 2 a front elevation thereof with thepost upon which it is secured.
In the drawings, A represents a post or su pport to which the vise B is attached. The vise consists of two jaws b b, the former movable back and forth on the base 0 and provided with the bottom rabbet 12 in which fits the bottom projection b on the jaw b. The base 0 is integral with the fixed jaw, while on it slides the movable jaw, which has end grooves to embrace it, the base itself being bolted to the post A. By this construction of the contacting faces of the jaw conforrnably Eerial No. 348,621. (No model.)
to the shape of a landside the latter may be held steadily in the desired position.
D represents a lever fulcrumed at d on the post A, pivoted at d to the rear of jaw 12, and provided-with a hook d at the lower end. This hook engages a roll 6, journaled between the prongs c e of the bar E, which is pivoted at one end to the post A and jointed at e to the rod F, whose lower end is pivoted to the front end of a treadle-lever G, fulcrumed to the support H. By pressing his foot on the treadle-lex'er Gr the rod F, bar E, and j aw-lever D are all raised, so as to clamp the .landside between the jaws while the smith is making the weld so as to properly attach the lay to the landside.
\VhatI claim as new, and desire to protectby Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the sliding jaw 12 of a blacksmiths vise, of the lever D, fulcrumed at d, pivoted to the back of said jaw at dand provided with the hook d at its lower end, the bar E, pivoted to the post A at one end and carrying between prongs e e a roll 6, which engages said hook 61 the rod F, and the treadle G, said rod being end-pivoted to bar E and treadle G, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR K. HATIIAVAY.
\Vitnesses:
AUGUST SWANsoN, J. H. SCHENCK.
