Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS DURANT AND HENRY GRISSIRN, OF STOOKTON, CALIFORNIA.`
IMPROVED WASHING-MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, AMos DURANT and HENREr GRIssIRN, of the city of Stockton, county of San J oaquin, and Stateof California, have invented a new, useful, andlmproved Washing-Machine; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full andexact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 is an endelevation.
A A are standards firmly fixedon each side of a box witha bottom forming the segment of a circle. B Bare arms xed at right augles to the standard-s. G G are levers on the outside of standards and box, working on the centers l 1. D D are two other levers, to which is attached a plunger E, working in the box and suspended from centers 2 2. i F F are arms attached to the lower end of levers G and to the suspension-bars G Gr, which are hun g from the extremity of the arms B and connected by a bar, H. I is a rod passing through the upper end of levers C and D, connecting them together.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,911. dated August 7, 1866.
In working the machine, the clothes,.with Water, Sto., having been placed in the box on each side of the plunger, the bar H is moved backward and forward with a reciprocating motion by hand or other power. tion is communicated by the arms F to the levers G, working on their centers or fulcrums at 1, and these levers being connected with the levers D by the rod I, and workin g on centers orfulcrums 2, and being attached to the plunger E, carry it backward and forward in the box and press the clothes at each stroke against a set of cleats at each end of the box. The plunger has, also, similar alternate cleats.
We do not claim the use of the box, plunger, or cleats as our invention; but i l We claiml The application and combination of the levers O C and D D, working from different centers, and connected with the plunger E, and
worked by reciprocating motion, as herein set forth.
`AMOS DURANT. HENRY GRISSIRN.
