Description
- W. H. CASTLE.-
Clothes-'Pullman .Non 63,739., Patented Maly 25, i875.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. CASTLE, OF GENEVA, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO R. O. ROTE, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CLOTHES-POUNDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 163,739, dated May 25, 1875; application filed September 7, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. H. CAsTLE, of Geneva., in the county of Ashtabula and State of Ohio, have invented certain Improvements -in GlothesPounders, of which the followingis a specieation:
Figure l is a side View of my improved clothes-pounder with its jaws in their normal position, and Fig. 2 is a corresponding view of the same with its jaws converging toward each other, which position they occupy when brought in contact with the articles to be pounded.
Like parts in the several figures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improve ment in clothes-pounders; and it consists of jaws so attached to a staff or handle as to have a converging motion, by which they are caused to pound the clothes or other articles, and at the same time squeeze them, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, O O refer to two jaws, fulcrumed at or about their center by means of pins D D to the extremities of the horizontal plate or slide B, and pivoted at their upper ends to links E E, pivoted to a horizontal piece or bar, G, rigidly secured to the handle or staff A. The stati' or handle A,
which passes down through an orice in the plate or slide B, is provided at its lower end with a cross-head or cylinder, F, upon which the plate or slide B, provided on its lower side with a eoncavity, seats itself, as shown in Fig.
1, when the jaws O C stand in their normal position, and against the lower side of which bea-r the inner curved surfaces of the jaws O C when the latter occupy the position indicated in Fig. 2, or are in the act of pounding and squeezing the clothes, 85e. A spring, H, coiled around the staff A, and pressing upon the plate or slide B, throws the jaws apart after the removal of downward pressure from the same.
It will be observed that, as the yielding jaws strike the clothes, their upper ends are forced outwardly by the inclined links, giving an oblique motion to the lower ends ofthe jaws, whereby the clothes are simultaneously pounded and squeezed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A clothes-pounder havin g j aws fulcrumed to a slide on its handle, and linked or jointed at their upper ends to the latter, whereby their lower ends are caused to similtaneously pound and squeeze the clothes as they strike the same, substantially as shown and described.
2. The handle A, with its lower end provided with a cross-head, F, in combination with the jaws O O, slide B, and links E, with or without the spring H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
