Description

i ni TED sTATns PATENT JOSEPH SAWYER ANDLYMAN CLARK, OF ROYALSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
PEG-RAS?.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 10,316, dated December 13, 185,3.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, JOSEPH SAWYER and LYMAN CLARK, of South Royalston, in the county ofWorcester and State of'Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instrumentsy for Removing Pegs from'the Interior of Boots and Shoes, called Peg-Rasps; and we'hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a view of the rasp, Fig. 2 a longitudinal section through lthe center of the same.
In instruments of this character as heretofore constructed the rasp has usually been secured permanently to its handle at an angle suitable to enable it to reach the pegs in the toes of the boot; when thus set it acts,y very imperfectly upon those in the heel, and
a separate instrument is sometimes made use of for removing these. v
The attempt has been made to unite these two instruments in one by hanging the rasp upon a pivot, so as to enable it to assume any required position to operate upon either the toe or heel of the boot, but this has failed to accomplish the desired end, for
want of that stiffness and stability necessary to the successful operation of the instrument. Y
The nature of our invention consists in hanging the rasp upon a pivot, and-adapting thereto a spring bolt, by which means I it may be securely fastened in one of two positions, so that the same instrument may be instantaneously adapted to workeither in the heel or the toe of the boot.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention we will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the handle of the instrument, B the metallic ferrule, C the rasp Vpivoted at a. Upon the lug or ear b of the rasp are two holes 00, into which fits the spring bolt -upon the rasp with one hand, the thumb piece e is depressed with the other, and the bolt d is withdrawn-from the hole c; the
yrasp is then, without removing the boot,
instantaneously revolved into the position represented in dotted lines vin Fig. 2, when 'the bolt springs into the hole o, and the instrument is in order for operating withinl the toe of the boot.
The pegrasp as thus constructed has all a the advantages possessed by the old .instrument, together with the capability of being used in both heel and toe, and without're- Wedo not claim hanging the rasp of a `l tool "for cleaning out pegs from the inside of shoes and boots upon a pivot and allowingv it to adjust itself to the position required, as this has'been done before, and is furthermore liable to several objections, the
removal of which is the object of our present invention; but
What we do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the spring bolt and` thumb piece vor their equivalents with the pivoted rasp-constructed and operatingin tially as described.
