IMPROVEMENT IN SCHOOL-CHAIRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 138,190, dated April 22, 1873; application led April 9, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN J. PIPER, of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improved School-Ghair; and I do hereby declare thatthe following is a full, clear, and exact descriptionthereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part'of this specication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in whichf- Figure is a front view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same through line H of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a crosssection of the frame., showing the inside iiange and the end of the slat made to t the saine; and Fig. 4 is a planview of a portion of the frame, showing the inside flange and the projections thereon, which keep the slats in place.
My invention relates to a chair designed for use in school-rooms; and it consists of a stand or pedestal having secured thereto two metallic side pieces, each having an inside flange, upon which are fitted slats having a recess made in each end, and the frame is held to the slats by screws inserted through the frame into the ends of a suicient number of slats for that purpose, and small projections upon the flanges serve to keep the slats a proper distance apart.
That others skilled in the art may be able to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same.
In the drawing, A represents the pedestal, provided at the top with a iiange, B, to which are bolted or secured the metallic side pieces or frame b by the wings e attached thereto. These side pieces or frame b are provided with an inside flange, a, upon which are made the upright protuberancesor projections j" at suitable intervals apa-rt. The slats a have a recess, h, made in each end, into which fits properly the flange a, and the chair is fitted together by placing the ends of each slat a between two of the projectionsf, with the flange a in the recess h in the ends of the slats; and any desired number of the slats, as c, c', and
c, may be made sufficiently large to receive a screw inserted through the frame b, the rest of the slats being held in place, and at proper distances apart, by the flange a and the projections f. Instead, however, ot making the slats c, c', and c larger and inserting screws, the frame b might be held together and against the slats by rods extending from one side of the frame to the other, and making all the slats nearly alike, as the rods would not interfere with the slats. The wings e may then be firmly secured to the iiange B ofthe pedestal, which may be of any desired forni and ornamentation. 'Ihese wings may be made of thin steel or of any other suitable metal, and of proper thickness to serve as a spring to the chair-seat, with any degree of elasticity desired, according to the strength or thickness of the metal and its adjustment to the iiange; and the outer edge of the frame may be ornamented in any desired manner.
Instead of the flange a on the frame b a groove might be made on the inside of the frame similar to the recess h, and the ends of the slats provided with a tongue to fit into said groove, which would be the sanne in operation as that hereinbefore described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an improved school-chair, the frame b provided with the inside flange u and the projections f, in combination with the slats a having a recess, h, in each end, whereby the slats and frame are fitted together, and the slats secured at proper distances apart, substantially as described.
2. The frame b provided with the wings or pieces e, in combination with the pedestal provided with the flange B, whereby the chairseat is secured to said pedestal, substantially as set forth.
