Description

ene-d sans aient Wine.
D. B. SELEY, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS.
'i Lemmi vPaseo No. 105,601, om: .my 19, 1870.
wap-
IMPRQVBMENT 1N enumera-Hooge.
` The Schedule'referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern.'
1 Be it known that I, D. B.. SEELEY, of Sterling, in the county of Whitesides and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pruning-Hooks; and dohereby declare that the y l y following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof,
reference being had to. the accompanying drawing,`
Aand to the let-ters of referencemarked thereon.
The nature of `my invention consists in the formation and construction of a knife for pruning-hooks, as will hereafter be fully set forth and described.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my knife. l Figure 2is an edge view of thesame.
`Letter D represents the handles of lmy hook, upon l l the Vends. of which are placed the rings a, which are provided with the stops b, so `as to regulate the distance the handles are toclose. y Uponthe end of the shank O is formed the hoo B, which is pivoted tothe shank G', and has a projection or screw upon one side, which extends through the circular slot g, formed in the side of the knifeA'.
Tothe end'of the shank C' is attached the knife A, which-is made to move back and forth,` by the open-A ing and closingof` the handles, guided in its'4 movei l mentby the projection on the side of the hook B.
This knife has two bevels, z and x, formed upon its end, one of which is longer than the other.
For cutting purposes, the long bevel z, and the sharp edge 1, formed on the hook, are sul'oient, but then the hook has to be either formed of or faced with steel, or else the knife will Wear it away.
By'forming thesecond bevel x, the edge of the knife' does not touch the hook, and so I am enabled to form the ent-ire hook B of iron, which makes the cost conv siderabl y less, and which also takes off the side pressure, by 'equalizingthe draft, thus causing the knife to cut much more easily.
Having thus described my invention,
VhatI claim, and desire to secure-by Letters Patent, is-
The knife A, provided with the circular slot g,.and having the hevels z and a: formed upon its end, in combination with the handles D, stops b, and hook B, when all are combined to form a pruning-hook, sub" stantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregong,I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of March, 1869.
Witnesses: D. B. SEELEY.
