The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o1 the sama nient in Hay-Knives; and I do hereby declare l,that theffollowing is-a `full, clear,and exact description l of the construction and operation of the saine, refer ence being had to the annexeddrawing, making a partot' this specicatiomaud tothe letters and iig-l `ures of reference marked thereon.

My invention relates tojhay-knives; and ,l It consistsin the vformation of the blade, whereby but little friction isoccasioued yby its 'passage through the stra-w, and its retraction is accomplished with far Quay.

, The letter A of the drawing designates the shank,

which consists simplyof a" rod of iron bent in the manner shown on the-drawing.

The curvature is concave, and theA long narrow point thereby producedis especially adapted for peuetrating the straw.A i l The blade is not very wide, thus preventing frietion against the ends ofthe cut straw, and its upper edge "z, which is 'also V-shaped, and parallel to.its cutting-edge',, isv thinned down, in order to facilitate its withdrawal from the straw.

^ It will'be observed that there is a diamond-shaped space between the'blade and the 'spread ends of the shank-rods, Thisspace has been lettered m in the drawing.

The hay-knife herein. described, having the V` shaped blade O, with concave cutting-edges d, and beveled upper edge`z,'shank A, bent toward theoperator, near itsrupperend, and handle B, welded between the shank-rods below the bend, substantially as specified.
