Description
N-FEYERS, PHOTO-LITHOGRAPMER, WASHINGTON D C @anni f anni.
To all whom 'it mayconeefra: ,1 v
Be it known that `I,`\I)v,t1v11-:n H. WILE, of New .'Iittsbnxg, in the county of- VVa'ne and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Impro\'e= i N wired glam :n ANI-Enit WIDE; or NEW' PITTSBURG, OHIO.
LettersPatentNo. 108,076, dated October 4,.'1870. i
I MPRovEMEN'r In HAV-KNlvEs.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part o1 the sama nient in Hay-Knives; and I do hereby declare l,that theffollowing is-a `full, clear, and exact description l of the construction and operation of the saine, refer ence being had to the annexeddrawing, making a partot' this specicatiomaud tothe letters and iig-l `ures of reference marked thereon.
` Figure 1 of the drawing isa front "view of Inyini fvention.
Figure 2 is an edge View ,wand l Figure 3 isa sectional view of the blade.`
My invention relates tojhay-knives; and ,l It consistsin the vformation of the blade, whereby but little friction isoccasioued yby its 'passage through the stra-w, and its retraction is accomplished with far Quay.
u Also, y in the economical Inode yof construction,
adopted.
, The letter A of the drawing designates the shank,
which consists simplyof a" rod of iron bent in the manner shown on the-drawing.
p Durngthe bending operation, and while the iron is hot, the handle Bis weldedinto 'place between the jointed rods which form the'shank.
I Atthe lowerend of the shank the rods are spread, yand to their ends are welded the ends of thelV-shaped blade C. l
'The cutting-edges d ot the lblade. become lessv curved toward the point.v
The curvature is concave, and theA long narrow point thereby producedis especially adapted for peuetrating the straw.A i l The blade is not very wide, thus preventing frietion against the ends ofthe cut straw, and its upper edge "z, which is 'also V-shaped, and parallel to.its cutting-edge',, isv thinned down, in order to facilitate its withdrawal from the straw.
^ It will'be observed that there is a diamond-shaped space between the'blade and the 'spread ends of the shank-rods, Thisspace has been lettered m in the drawing.
What I claimas my inv'entioinand desire tosc; Y cure by Letters Patent', is-
The hay-knife herein. described, having the V` shaped blade O, with concave cutting-edges d, and beveled upper edge`z,'shank A, bent toward theoperator, near itsrupperend, and handle B, welded between the shank-rods below the bend, substantially as specified. A w Y In testimony that I claim the ahove,'I have hereunto subscribed my name, 'in the presence of two witnesses. i Y
DANIEL II. VILE. I
