FOLDING COT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d J 18 1921- 'Applicationfiled March 27, 1918. Serial No. 224,994.
To all w 7mm it may concern: 7
Be it known that we, HARRY A. MAQKIE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Atlantic City, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, and ADAM H. Susanna, a citizen of the United States, residing in York, in the county of York and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Cots, whereof thefollowing is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Our cot comprises a main frame, the sides of which are jointed so that the endsof the frameare capable of folding and also of ad-.
justment; leg brackets attac'hedto the central portion of the main frame, with legs pivotally attached to the leg brackets, so as to be themselves capable of folding; and also adjustment pieces bracing themselves against the leg brackets, whereby the ends of the main frame may be set and held in a number of positions, making the cot especially applicable for the use of patients. This adjustment of the cot ends with reference to the central portion may be effected even when the legs are folded, the leg brackets serving, upon occasion, as auxiliary short legs. This adjustability of the cot ends when the legs are folded also facilitates use of the cot as a bed spring for an ordinary bedstead. These parts are lightly and simply constructed. We are not awareof any previous light and simple construction of a cot whereby adjustability of the end portions of the frame is secured in combination with folding legs, whereby the entire cot may be folded into a small and compact space for transportation. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I, is a perspective view of a cot embodying our invention.
Fig. II, is a plan of the main frame ofthe same, and
Fig. III, is a side view in their folded position.
The main frame is rectangular with sides and ends formed preferably of angle iron. It is provided with a spring mattress 1, slung between the sides of the main frame in a manner well-known in this art.
The sides of the main frame each consist showing the parts of three portions, namely, a center portion 2,
and end portions 3-3. These are united by hinge-jointst4, which comprise side plates 5 5, bolted to the portions which form the side frame, upwardly projected knuckles 66, on the corners of the side plates, and
a pivotal bolt 7 portions of the side frame in relation to the end portions is so proportionedas to permit the end portions to be folded one upon the other over the central portion, the projection of the knuckles facilitating this folding; the
end portions are also capable of adjustment above or below the central portion of the cot by themeans which I will rendering the cot'suitable for invalids or pa ents.
Attached to the center portions of the side frame near their extremities are permanent leg brackets 8-8. These are formed of angle iron and-arerigidly held in permanent angular relationshipto theside frame by braces 9, the attachment of the brackets being such as to make a rather obtuse angle with the side frame as shown. These leg brackets are braced by cross pieces 10, uniting them in pairs. Running between cross piece 10, and the end of each of the leg brackets is a curved brace 11, which performs the further function of acting as a locking device for the adjustment pieces 12-12. These adjustment pieces are pivoted at one end to the end portions of the side frame. They are curved in outline and their swinging extremities are united by the cross piece 13. The lower edge of the adjustment pieces is notched and the interfitting of these notches against the brace 11, enables the adjustment of the ends of the frame to be accomplished and maintained. It willbe observed that the adjustment of each end ofthe frame is independent of that of the other end.
To each leg bracket is pivoted a leg 15, connected to its fellow by the brace 16. The
pivot bolt 17, by which this is effected is The length of the central 7 describe, thereby a spring mattress mounted between its sides,
and having in said sides joints permitting j folding or adjustment of its ends; leg brackets' permanently attached to the central por- ,tions of the frame sides, and braces holding said 'leg brackets 1n position; legs pivotally it attached to the leg brackets, so that they may v be folded back upon the central portion of the cot frame; and adjustment pieces pivotally attached to the endportions of the frame sides, and having notches which interlock with the aforesaid braces to secure said end portions in adjusted position, so that the endportions of the cot may be adjusted even when its legs are folded, and that said leg brackets may serve as auxiliary legs.
v 2. A folding cot comprising a frame with a spring mattress mounted between its sides, and having joints in said sides which permit folding or adjustment of its ends either above or below its central portion; leg brackets rigid on the central portion of the frame sides; legs pivotally mounted on said leg brackets, so as to be foldable back upon the central portion of the cot or extensible to an inclined position wherein they are stable under the weight of the cot; andad justment pieces pivoted to the end portions of the frame sides and coacting with said leg brackets to maintain the desired adjustment of the cot ends even when the legs are folded, so that said leg brackets may serve as auxiliary legs.
' 3. A'compactly folding cot comprising a frame with a spring mattress mounted betweenuts sides, and having in said sides joints which permit folding or adjustment of its ends back upon and overlapping its central body portion and one another; leg brackets rigid on the central portions of the frame sides adjustment pieces for maintaining the desired adjustment of the cot ends when in use; and'legspivotally mounted-on said legbrackets so as to befoldable back upon and overlapping one-another and the central portion of the cot body.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto c jnnanrrsnnnnnn.
