Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WASHINGTON "WHEAT OF PHILIPSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
iMPROVEMENT IN MOP-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 135,679, dated February 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. W EAT, of Philipsburg, in the county of Centre and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mops; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in tbe'art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin g and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a mop-head or mop-holder, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referringto the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my entire mop-holder, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sec tion of a cross-bar in the same.
A represents a socket, in which a handle, B, is inserted. From the socket A extend two arms, 0 G, in opposite directions. These arms are curved, as shown, but their outer ends run parallel with each other, and are connected by a cross-bar, D. On the inner sides of the straight and parallel portions of the arms 0 O are formed ratchet-teeth a a, which point toward the connecting-bar D. In the teeth a a, work the slotted ends of a movable cross-bar, G, which is made in two parts, the inner end of one part having a socket or tube, 1), formed upon it, and a spiral spring, at, inserted in the same, while the inner end of the other part of the cross-bar is formed with a tenon, e, to fit in the tube b and bear against the spring d. The tubular part of said cross-bar is slotted, as shown in Fig. 1, and on the other part is formed a tongue, f, to move in said slot and hold the two parts in proper position.
The cross-bar G may be pressed down one end at a time onto the connecting-bar D so as to hold either cloth or rubber; and to open it to take out or receive the cloth one end is pressed back in the tube and drawn away from the connecting-bar, and then the other end.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the frame A G D, having teeth a a, and the jointed movable crossbar G, all constructed and a1 ranged substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand.
GEORGE WASHINGTON WHEAT.
