HOSE-WRENCHES.
A Specification formingpart ofLettcrs Patent No. 144,827, dated Novenbtr 25, 1873; application filcd November 5, 1873.
A To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BUCKLIN, J r., of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Islandyhave invented certain Improvements in Hose-Wrenches, of which the following is a specification:
My said invention relates to a device for coupling and uncoupling hose, and for other purposes; and consists of a jointed clutch, having a perforation in either arm, and the upper half of said jointed clutch having a short rearward extension, resting upon a spring, the whole being attached to a handle to facilitate its use.
The accompanying drawing is hereby made a part of this Specification.
a is the handle, and b c the arms of said jointed semicircular clutch. d 0 Show the perforations in the ends of the arms b c. f is the joint which unites the upper and lower halves or arms of said clutch; and g is the short rearwardextension from the upper half or arm; h is a thumb-rest on the end of said extension g; and i a spiral spring, one end of which is inserted in a hollowed place in the handle a, and the other end supporting the part g. The said respective parts may be made of iron or other suitable material.
It is well known that hose-couplin gs are p'rovided with two short knobs or protuberances. In the use of said invention it is designed to fit the arms b 0 onto said knobs or protuberances by means of the perforations d e. In applying the device the upper half or arm of the clutch is raised by pressing on the thumb-rest h, and, after the said knobs or protuberances are fitted into the arms 0 d, as aforesaid, the pressure is removed from said thumb-rest, and
down upon the coupling of the hose, and firmly ing is entirely completed. The Wrench is easily and quickly removed from the hose by pressing upon said thumb-rest, and raising the upper arm or half of said clutch, as afore described.
One of the great defects of the old wrench consists in its inevitable tendency to slip 011' the coupling. The above-described device entirely obviates this annoying difficulty by firmly securing the arms to the coupling when the wrench is used.
I do not confine myself to the use of a spiral spring under the part 9; any other form' of sprin g may be used for the purposes described.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A hose-wrench composed of a jointed semicircular clutch, having the ends of the arms thereof perforated, as shown, and having the rearward extension g and spring i, all substantially as'and for the purposes set forth.

the spring i then forces the said arms tightly holds them there until the jointing or disjoint
