NO. a n August UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
BARNET It. RAPP, OF WESTOHESTER, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM H. LAWSON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14.2,274, dated August 26, 1873; application filed May 6, 1873.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it known that I, BARNET It. RAPP, of Westchester, Chester county, Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Thill-Oouplin gs, of which the followingis a specification:
The object of my invention is to improve the thill-coupling, for which Letters Patent No. 124,159 were granted to myself and Wm. H. Lawson, assignee, on the 27th day of February, 1872 and my improvement consists in dispensing with the long arm of the cam-lever D, described in the said patent, and substituting therefor a socket, e, for the reception of the end of a lever, E, as shown in the side view, Fig. 1, of the accompanying drawing.
A represents the carriage-axle; B, a clip passing around the same; 0, an extensionplate secured to the clip D, the cam-lever jointed to the outer end of the extension-plate by a pin, a, and arranged, when turned up, as shown in the drawing, to bear against an elbowplate, F, and thus compress ablock of rubber, G, between the said elbow-plate and the thill H, Which is jointed to ears (1 on the clip by a pin retained in place by arms f on the camlever, all as described in the said patent, in which, however, the cam-lever was provided with, and operated by, a long permanent arm, the latter being more or less unsightly and in the way. In place of this permanent arm on the cam-lever, I form on the latter a socket, e, for the reception of the end at of a lever, E, the
said end as being toothed or serrated so that it can retain its hold in the socket. By depressing this lever E the cam-lever may be turned to the position shown by dotted lines, thereby relieving the thill from the pressure of the rubber-block G, and at the same time uncovering the ends of the pin which connects the thill to the ears (I d, and permitting the said pin to be withdrawn. By the same lever E the cam-lever may be readily restored to its original position when the shafts of the vehicle have been readjusted t0 the coupling, after which the end of the lever E may be withdrawn from the socket e of the cam-lever and deposited in a suitable place ready for use. I prefer to make the lever E with a transverse handle, y, at its outer end, so that this handle may be used as a hammer-head to drive out the pin which connects the thill to the ears d,
should there be any difficulty in removing said I claim as my invention- The clip D, having a socket, e, for the reception of the end of a detachable lever, E, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BARNEI R. RAPP.
