PAPER-HANGERS TOOL.
speeication of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 19, 1909.
Application filed December 15, 1908. Serial No. 467,708.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. OLDs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- Hangers Tools, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to paper-hangers tools and consists of improvements in the handle of a paste brush wherein a paper cutter is mounted in such manner as to be readily accessible when desired for use but which is withdrawn into said handle when not desired for use. I attain this object by the devices and mechanisms illustrated in the accon'ipanying drawing in which,A
Figure l .is a side elevation of a paste brush with my invention mounted thereon; Fig. 2 is a side view of a portion thereof showing the paper cutter in its operating position; and Fig. 3 is an end view of the paste brush showing the cutter wheel within the cavity in the handle.
Similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The handle l of the paste brush is cut away at one end along the dotted line 2 and two side plates 3 are secured to the handle l, on each side thereof, by means of suitable rivets et. A cavity is thus formed in the end of the handle l. Within this cavity is mounted the arm 5 by means of a pin 6 which passes through one of the side plates 3 and to the outer end of which is secured the operating lever 7. The cutter wheel 8 is mounted at the end of the arm 5. A spring 9 is secured to the arm 5 and the handle l and tends to draw the arm 5 into the cavity so that the wheel S shall be normally between the side plates 3 as shown in Fig. l. A stop or pin l0 is inserted in the plate 3 in such position that the lever 7 will engage it when the wheel 8 is entirely within the cavity but before it has touched the bottom wall of the cavity in the handle 1. Another similar stop or pin 11. is also mounted therein at such position that when the lever 7 engages it the wheel 8 is in its operating position.
lszly invention is operated by simply pressing the lever 7 with the fingers and thus bringing the wheel 8 into its operating position whenever the paper is to be trimmed, and then when the lever 7 is released the spring' 9 draws the wheel 8 into the cavity and entirely out of the way, thus protecting its edge from injury and keeping it sharp.
Having described my invention what I claim is A device of the class described, comprising a handle having one end thereof partly out away; two plates secured to the sides of the handle and extending on each side of said cut-away portion to form a cavity; an arm pivoted in the cavity; a cutter wheel mounted on the end of the arm; a spring engaging` the arm to draw it into the cavity; and an operating lever mounted outside of one of the side plates and secured to the arm whereby said arm is turned on its pivot and the cutter wheel thereon removed from the cavity against the action of said spring.
In testimony whereof I afHX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS J. OLDS. Witnesses:
JAMES GORMAN, H. J SGHWINN.
