Description

Srr'rns WILLIAM BOYD, `OF HARTFORD, NEW YORK.
IMPROIVEMENTIN CLAMPS FOR THlLL-COUPLINGS.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,273, dated May 30, 1871.
' To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BOYD, of Hartford, in `the county of lVashington and Statewof New York, have invented a new and y useful Improvement in Clamp for Thill-Goup- 1in gs 3 and I do hereby declare that the followi ing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawing forming part of this specifi cation, in which-f-4 Figure lis a side view`0f my improved clamp,
1 parts being `broken away to show the construcction. being broken away to show Vthe construction.
Fig. 2is a rear viewfof the same, parts Similar letters of reference `indicate corresponding parts. l
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved clamp for drawing the eye of athilliron into place in a thill-coupling against the y `elasticity of the rubber, sothat the couplingbolt can beV readily inserted in place,4 'and which shall be simple in construction, convenientin use, and effective in operation 5 and it consists in the construction and combination i of the various parts of the clamp, as hereinai-` ter more fully described.
A is the lever or handle of the clamp, upon the forward end of which is formed a crosshead,B. Toone end-of the cross-head B is `securely attached a claw, C.
-in Figs. 1 and 2. By this construction the claw D maybe conveniently adj usted so that the 'claws O D may t upon the eyes of differbar or handle A, to which it is pivoted by a bolt, F,which passes through a hole in the slotted end of the -bar E, and through a slot, a', in the handle A. The outer end of' the bar E is curved upward and is slotted, as shown at Figs. l and 2, so as to receive and clasp the rear end of the clip-yoke of the coupling. In using the clamp the outer end of the slot-V ted bar E is hooked over the rear end of the clipyoke of the coupling, with its solid middle part resting upon the forward nut of said yoke. The claws O D are hooked upon the eye of the thill-iron, the` slot a enabling the clamp to properly adjust ,itself to the height ofthe thill-iron eye above the lower side of the'axle. When thus adjusted the lower or free end of the lever is drawn forward, which draws the eye of the thill-iron into its seat, so that the coupling-bolt can be readily inserted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination ot' the lever A a', crosshead B, stationary 4claw O, adjustable claw D, slotted bar E, and bolt F, with each other, said parts being constructed and operating substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
. WILLIAM BOYD.
