T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: y
Be itknown that 1 PHINEAS JONES, of Newark,.in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Rein-Holder; and I do hereby declare the followingr to he afull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make a part of' this specificatiomand in whichl Figure 1 is a perspective viewr of my device, representing it in position on the rein. f
Figure 2 is a vertical longitudinal section ofthe same. p i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
vThe subject of my invention is ajointed clamp, adapted to automatically and securely gripe the rein, but readily adjustable thereon, and aording a convenient hearing for the hund ofthe driver, as hereinafter ex plnined.
'In the drawings, A A represent a pair of ilaps or plates oi' meta-l, which may be covered with leather or other material, and are provided with earsB B, projecting endwise und forward from each corner of the straight end of each ap, for the reception ofrivets C C, to form a hinge connection. The endwise projection of the ears B forms a throat or cavity between the ends a a of the Haps for the reception of the rein D, and the forward projection ofthe said ears 'impartsthe character of levers to the flaps, so that pressure applied to the front of the device by the hand of the driver, as illustrated in iig. 1, will pause the ends a a torgripe the rein D more tightly as more force is applied. By a slight pressure of the thumb upon one flap, the gripe is instantly loosened, so that the` clamp may be slipped forward or backward on theereiu, as desired. Whennot in use the clamp may fold down upon the rein, as shown by red lines in fig. 2, so as to be out of the way, but will cling suiliciently to secure it from slipping out of reach. I 1
The ordinary way of' holding the reins cramps the 'hands and prevents the circulation of the blood, whereas with my improvement the reins can be heldA with the fingers straight, allowing the wearing of heavy gloves, and
leaving the circulation free.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- The adjustable rein-holder or clamp A B C, adapted to gripe the rein with a lever pressure, when drawn by the hand of the driver, substantially as and for the purposes set'l forth., A i i PHINEAS JONES.
Witnesses: Cms. D. SMITH, JAMES L. EwrN.
