SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application tiled August 13, 18

To aZZ whom it may concern.-

Be it known that 1, CHARLES C. JoHNsoN, of Springfield, county of Windsor, and State. of Vermont, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hop-Heads, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

This invention belongs to the same class as the old and well-known mop-head which exists in a great variety of forms; and the invention consists of an improved mop-head of the particular construction herein described, shown, and claimed.

Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.

The object of this invention is the production of a simple, cheap, and durable mophead of improved construction.

A rectangular frame, A, consisting of the sides A, a, b, and c, is formed on one end of a-short tubular neck, B, and is made integral with it. The neck adjacent to the side a of the frame A is reduced in size, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and through the opposite sides of the neck at this point are formed slots d and 6. An opening, 9, extends through the center of the side a of the frame to the interior of the neck 13.

0 represents a movable jaw which is com posed of a cross-head having arms hand z'and a flattened stem, 7;. The ends of the arms h and i are notched and slide on the sides I) and c of the frame A as guides. The stem k is provided on its edges with sectional screw-- threads, which, when the stem passes th rough the opening 9 into the hollow neck B, project through the slots d and e, as shown in Figs. 1 and 4.

On the reduced part of the neck B is fitted awinged nut, D, whose threads mesh into the threads of the stem 7?. This nut is made in two pieces, which are afterward riveted or otherwise secured together about the neck B.

It is designed to make the several parts described out of malleable iron, and when this material is used the notches in the ends of the arms h and tmay be produced by forming the ends as shown in Fig. 6, and, after adjusting the jaw 0 within the frame A, bending over the part 0 into the proper position.

A haft, E, is inserted in the end of the neck B opposite the frame A. This end of the neck may be provided with a suitable 6 shoulder, p, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

To attach a mop-cloth to themop-head, the nut D should be turned so as to draw the movable jaw O away from the side A of the frame A, which serves as a fixed jaw, when the ends of the mop-cloth can be passed through the space between the jaws and the nut I) turned in the opposite direction till the jaw O is forced to clamp the mopcloth firmly between itself and the side or fixed jaw A of the frame A.

To remove the mop-cloth,it is simply necessary to loosen the jaw 0, when the cloth can be readily pulled out.

The nut D, it will be observed, has only a rotary motion, whereas the jaw 0 moves longitudinally in the direction of the length of its stem.

A special advantage which a mop head of this particular construction possesses is, that the Tshaped jaw may be moved either up or down within the frame constituting the fixed jaw by simply turning the nut E in the proper direction.

Having now described my invention,what I 0 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A mophead consisting of the following elements in combination: a fixed jaw integral with a tubular and slotted neck, a T-shaped 5 movable jaw whose stem passes into said neck and is provided with sectional screw threads that protrude through the slots therein, anda winged nut fitted in a recess about the neck and adapted to engage with the protruding sectional threads on the stem of the movable jaw, all constructed and combined substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
