MONKEY-WRENCH.

SPECIFICATION forrning part of Letters Patent No. 226,339, dated April 6, 1880. Application filed February 26, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN MOFFET, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Monkey-Wrenches and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the aecompanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a monkeywreneh, as will lie-hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the annexed drawings, which fully illustrate my invention, Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the stationary jaw. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the movable jaw, and Fig. 4 is a view of the screw with movable jaw in vertical section.

A represents the stationary jaw of the monkey-wrench, formed with a flat shank, B, on the end of which is the handle 0, the whole being made of one piece of metal, and through the shank B is a longitudinal slot or opening, I), as shown.

D represents the movable jaw of the monkeywrench, provided with an extensiomD, which forms a sleeve of such size as to pass over the handle 0 and fit snugly around the shank B. In the sides of this sleeve, in the interior, are formed inclined and curved recesses a a,whieh constitute the nut in which the operatingscrew Gr works. This screw is placed in the slot 0 in the shank B, and has its threads roughened, as shown,'so as to be easily turned. After the screw is placed in the shank the sleeve D is slipped over the handle and onto the shank. Then by turning the screw the threads take into the recesses to within the sleeve D,whereby the jaw D is moved toward the stationary jaw A. The screw G, while it operates the sleeve D and jaw D to and from the stationary jaw A, is itself held in place by said sleeve, and cannot come loose unless by turning the screw the sleeve is entirely moved below the same.

The entire monkey-wrench is thus composed of simply three pieces. and can be manufactured very cheaply. There is nothing to get out of order, and it is-easily manipulated as required.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A monkey-wrench consisting of the jaw A, slotted shank B, and handle (3, all made in one piece, the movable jaw D, with sleeve-extension D, having interior recesses, a, and the screw G, substantially as herein set forth.
