Be it known that I, FREDERICK EISENHUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Irvington, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain newl and useful Improvements in Shaving- Brushes; and I do hereby declare ythe fol'- lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art tov which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. The present invention relates, generally, to improvements inshaving brushes; and, the present invention has reference, more particularly, to a novelmeans ofpositively securing the ferrule of the brush to the buttend of the brush-handle without the use of cement or other fastening means, as heretofore, the said securing or fasteningmeans serving at the same time as a carrier for a facemassaging attachment, if such attaclb ment is desired for use with the brush. p l The present invention, therefore,fha's for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed fastening means for attaching the ferrule containing the usual bunch of bristles about the butt-end of the handle, so that the parts will be vsecurely held by clamping action against turning or disconnection, and to provide a means for dispensing, if desired, with the usualmeans of cementing or otherwise securing the fer` rule upon the butt-end of the handle;

The invention "has'for its further object to provide in connection with Va shaving brush and the securing means above stated, a novel and simple construction for attaching to one side of the brusheferrule, a massaging device; and, the invention has fora still further object a novel arrangement and novel construction of guard which will? prevent the possibility of soap and watergetting upon the massaging fingers of the device, to contaminate the same'withf foreign matter, or destroying the usefulness of the device, and also to server as a means of preventing the water running down-the brush, upon the ferrule of the same, and then upon the fingers of the operator. y

jection or extension, as 11, the inner surface of which tapers outwardly, as at 12, so as to provide, as will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 1 of the drawings, above said bead 9, an annular receiving depression 13 for catching any water orsoap-suds from the bunch of bristles, whenusing the shaving brush. This guard is usually made of soft rubber so as to be easily forced over the end of the ferrule, being held in place by frictional contact with the ferrule, and being readily removed from the ferrule for cleansing purposes.

The said guard may, if desired, be provided with an extension 1a, formed with a hole or perforation 15, said extension eX- tending downwardly and lying close to the outer surface of the ferrule, and the said hole or perforation 15 being in alinement with a hole or perforation 29 in the side of the ferrule 3.

The previously mentioned massaging device, which is detachably mounted upon one side of the shaving brush, comprises a baseplate 16 placed upon the end-face of the butt-end of the handle 2, said plate being secured to said butt-end by means of a screw 17, or other suitable fastening means, and having an upwardly extending and perforated flange 18, said base-plate 16 'and its iiange 18 having sufiicient resiliency so that it will be slightly towed in an outward direction toward the interior surface of the ferrule, when the various parts, to be presently described, are in their assembled relation, so asto serve as an anchor or binding member to securely clamp the ferrule in its position upon the butt-end of the handle, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings. The perforation in said flange 18 is in alinernent with the,` perforations in the ferrule 3 and in the extension 141 of the guard'lO, a screwthreaded bolt 19 being passed through the several perforations in said flange 18, the ferrule 3, and said extension 14. To prevent turning of the` said bolt, when the several parts are tightened in their assembled relation, the head 2O of said bolt, which is placed directly above the base-plate 16 and against the fiange 18, is preferably of elongated shape, as shown. Upon the extending and screw-threaded shank-portion of said bolt 19 are mounted and screwed thereon, a soft rubber washer 21, a tightening'nut 22, and an enlarged disk-shaped member or element 23, the parts being finally and lirmly secured in place by an additional nut 24,substantially as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Embracing the marginal edge-portion of said disk-shaped element 23, and suitably secured about said edge-portion, is the recessed portion 26 of a cup-shaped massaging member or element 25, made of soft rubber or other analogous material, and its main body-portion having extending therefrom a multiplicity of massaging fingers, as 27.

From an inspection of said Figs. 1 and 2, it will readily be understood, when the several devices and partshave been secured in their assembled relation, and properly and firmly tightened, that the end-edges 28, of the previously mentioned flange 18, as said flange is bowed, will firmly bear upon the inner surface of the ferrule 3, and the latter having sufiicient resiliency, the result will be that the slight distortion of the ferrule will cause it to become firmly bound to the butt-end 5 of the handle 2, so that the brushhandle will at all times be tight, and with the constant use of the brush there will be noV loosening or disassembling of the various parts.

The anchoring device may also be used with shaving brushes in which the ferrule is internally screw-threaded, as at 29, and is screwed upon an externally screwthreaded butt-end 30 of a handle 31, as shown in Fig. 8 of the drawings.

The anchoring means, as well as the massaging member, and the various parts for securing said elements inltheir assembled relation, is the same as that herein-above described in connection with the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, and any further description of the same is therefore deemed unnecessary.

From the foregoing description, and from an inspection of the figures of the drawings, it will be clearly evident, that the guard 10 may be omitted, if desired. The massaging element, in some instances, may also be omitted, in which case simply the anchoring device, with its bolt 19 andV corresponding tightening nut are employed.

I am fully aware, therefore, that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of the present invention as set forth in the foregoing specification. Hence, I donot limit my present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the various devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the-exact details of the vconstruction of the said parts, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.-

A shaving brush comprising-a handle having a butt-end, a ferrule upon said buttend, an anchoring means within said ferrule having a portion located upon said lbutt-end, and having another portion bearing against the inner surface-portion of the ferrule, means; connected with the first-mentioned portion of the anchoring meansfor securing the same upon said butt-end, and means con- 'nec't'ed with the second-mentioned portion of the anchoring means for causing a binding action between sald second-mentloned portion of the anchoring means and the inner surface-portion of the ferrule.

with a handle having a butt-end, a ferrule mounted upon said butt-end, said ferrule being provided in its side with a perforation, and an anchoring means comprising a baseplate, means for securing said plate upon said butt-end, said base-plate having a perforated flange, the end-edges of said flange bearing in engagement upon the inner surface-portion of said ferrule, a tightening bolt connected with said flange, said bolt extending through the perforation in said flange and also through the perforation in said ferrule, and means upon that portion of the bolt extending beyond the outer surface of said ferrule for causing a binding action between the end-edges of the flange and the inner surface portions of said ferrule.

3. In a shaving brush, in combination, with a handle having a butt-end, a ferrule mounted upon said butt-end, and an anchoring means comprising a base-plate, means for securing said plate upon said butt-end, said base-plate having a perforated flange, the end-edges of which bear in engagement upon the inner surface-portion of said ferrule, a tightening bolt connected with said flange and extending through said ferrule, and means upon said bolt for causing a binding action between the end-edges of the flange and the said ferrule, and a massaging element mounted upon said bolt.

4. In a shaving brush, in combination, with a handle having a butt-end, a ferrule mounted upon said butt-end, said ferrule having a perforation in its side, and an anchoring means comprising a base-plate, means for securing said base-plate upon said butt-end, said butt-end having a perforated flange, the end-edges of which bear in engagement upon ythe inner surface-portion of said ferrule, a tightening bolt mounted in the perforation of said flange and extending through the perforation in said ferrule, a head upon said bolt bearing against said flange, a washer and tightening nut upon the projecting portion offsaid bolt, a diskshaped element also mounted upon said bolt, an auxiliary nut for tightening said diskshaped element in place, and a massaging member provided with finger-like extensions mounted upon said disk-shaped element.
