Specification of Letters ratent.
Patented June 13, 1916.
Y "Application filed August 25,-i91s. Seria1 No.78 6,599.
To-all'whom it may concern: I Be it known that I, AUGUsTo E. MUELLER, a citizen of Argentina, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a ,new and useful Broom, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to brooms and brushes of all types.
- provide a broom element which will be sepof my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation The principal object of my invention is to arate from the handle of the broom, and to provide 'such an element which may be readily secured to said handle and which may be readily replaced when worn-out.
Further-objects and advantages will appear hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings, which are, for illustrative purposes only: Figure 1 is a.
perspective drawing of the clampingmeans showmg my invention applied to an ordinary broom. Fig. 3 is a section on-the lines in -1g of- Fig. 2. Fig.4 is an alternativeform of my invention as applied to an ordinary whisk broom. Fig. 5 is a section along the lines;w --m of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a tool for manipulating my invention. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modification of my invention as shown in a -disassembled position.
In theform of my invention shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, 10 is a handle having a wood'filler 12 formed on the, end thereof 11 is a metal member secured to the wood filler 12. 9 Spikes 13' are provided fastened in the filler member 12 and projecting downwardly therefrom as-shown. The metal member 11 is provided-with aback extension 14, which extends"; downwardly therefrom. A lid 15 hinged about a pin. 161- in the metal member 11 is provided, this lid having a configuration similar to the back 14. Holes 16. and
17 are providedin the members 14 and 15,
through which screws 18 secured by nuts 19 may be passed as shown in Fig. 3.- A re movable broom member 2.0 is provided, c'on sisting of any form of broom material, such as straw, bristles, wood fiber or. the like.
- This broom material is secured iriathe form desired by the lacing members 21' is 'ordinarily secured at the upper end by'abody 22 of adhesive material such as glue or wax. In .the embodiment of my invention shown in Fig.-4 and Fig. 5 a-handle is provided having a' ring 31 at the upper end thereof,
having a ferrule 61 and a screw 62 is adapttools are absolutely necessary, but I ordii the screws 18 and 36 upon and having a metal shell 32 provided with a back. 33, which extends downwardly in a somewhat similar manner to the back 14 herelnbefore'described. In this embodiment of my being flat. A cover 34 is provided pivoted about a pin 35 and secured by a bolt 36 and anut as shown. A single impaling member 38 is centrally located in regard to the hanlacing members 41 is also provided. In the embodiment of my invention shown 1n Fig. 7 a handle of any suitable material ed to clamp a cover 63 to the top of the broom member 64 by the screw 62 engaging a block 65 which is placed inside the broom member 64, the broom member being fastened thereupon by means of the lacing 66, 7.:
which is preferably of wire and which extends around the broom member 64 and is looped down around the block 65. 'Lacings 67 are also provided.
For the manipulation of my invention no narily provide a tool as shown in Fig. 6, this consisting of a piece of bent wire 50, provided with an awl'51 on'one end thereof and a screwdriver 52 adapted to operate the other.
The method of operation of my invention,
is as follows. The handle 10, together with its attached parts, is, ordinarily furnished without a. broom or brush member. When nuts 19 are removed from; the screws 18 and the screws 18 are entirely removed. The
cover 15 is then thrown back, as shown in 95 upwardly upon the spikes 13, these spikes- Fig.1, and the broom member 20 is pushed passing through the hardened adhesive material 22 and projecting into the body of the broom member 20. The cover 15 is thenthrown over'into theposition shown in Fig. 3 and a-hole is made: through the broom member 20 by inserting a sharp pin,
such as'5l, through the holes 16 and 17.
When -:these holes are properly formed-the screws 18 are inserted and the. cover 15 is securely forced into place by means of the nuts 19. Broom members are inserted in the form shown in Figs. 4 and 5 in exactly a similar manner, the nuts and the screws 36 being removed and the cover 34 turned 110 invention the upper portion of the 60 broom 1's circular in section in the place of t 65 dle 30 and a brush member 40 secured by it is desired to insert such a member the up into the position shown in. dotted lines in Fig. 4.- The broom member 40 is then pushed upwardly upon the impaling member 38 and the cover 34 is dropped into place, a hole being made through the broom member 40 and the bolt 36 and nut 37 being replaced. I e
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 7 I insert the broom member (Sal into the cover 63 and screw the screw-62 into the block 65 until the ferrule 61 bears firmly against the upper edge of the cover 63.
In the ordinary forms of brooms, the handle 10 and the broom member are permanently attached together and Whenever the broom or brush member is Worn out, the handle is thrown away; This is objectionable upon the score of expense and results in a very poor quality of handle being ordinarily furnished. In my invention it is possible to furnish n first-class handle which will last practically indefinitely andtovrepluce the broom elements as they wear out with new elements at a ,yery
small expense.
In the Whisk broom shown in Figs; e and 5, or in similar hand brooms it is often desired to furnish the handle and attached parts in expensive mountings, as these are articles for personal use upon which a person feels justified in spending somemoney. By utilizing the principle of my'invention, it is possible to make handles of highiy ornamental and expensive materials which will last indefinitely, and in 'Which new v broom elements may, be placed as desired.
' .s when claim is:
broom member and to secure it in fixed reletion to said handle.
3. A broom comprisin a handle having a block secured to the lower end thereof, spikes projecting from the lower end of said block, a detachable broom member adapted to be impaled upon said spikes,-a member secured to said block and projecting downwardly therefrom to form a back adapted to fit around one side of seid detechable broom member, and a hinged cover adapted toclampupon said broom member and secure it in fixed relation to said handle.
' In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand at Los Angeles, California, this 15th day of August, 1913.
'1. A broom comprising e handle having 'Aneus'ro E. MUELLER.
