Description

(No Model.)
J. P. BARTLETT.-
BRUSH.
Patented'Jan. Z, 1883.
A'borwi llNiTEn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. BARTLETT: OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
BRUSH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent'No. 269,910, dated January 2, 1883.
Application filed September 12, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES F. BARTLETT, of Cleveland, in the county of Cu ahoga and State of Ohio, useful Improvements in Brushes; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is perspective view of my improved brush. Fig. 2 is avertical sectional view of the same. Fig. Sis a detail view of the handle. Fig. 4 is a detail view of the shell or socket A, and Fig. 5 is a detail View of the wedge or plug.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
Thisinvention relatesto brushes; and itconsists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents a shell or socket, made of metal of any suitable shape, and ofa size to hold the required quantity of bristles. In said socket is placed a bottom piece,B, of wood or other material, leaving only a sufljcient portion of the rim of said socket projecting to get a firm hold upon the bristles. The head of socket A has a central perforation, G.
D is a plug or wedge, having at its upper end a screw-threaded shank, E.
F is the handle, the end of which is provided with a ferrule, G, having a screw-threaded opening, H. Said ferrule is made square, as shown, so as to be readily grasped and held by have invented certain new and an ordinary wrench when, as will be presently described, it is desired to turn it and the bandle in the act of putting the brush together.
in operation, a sufficient quantity of bristles are placed in the shell or socket A. The wedge D is then inserted, and its screw-threaded shank E drawn or forced out through the opening (J, after which the handle is adjusted upon the stem or shank E by means of the ferrule G. By turning the handle the wedge or plug D is forced upwardly, thus clamping the bristles securely between itselfand the shell A. These clamping parts, being made entirely of metal, are not exposed to injury by shrinkage or swelling, as ordinarily-constructed brushes.
I am aware that in brushes of this class a socket having a bottom piece is not new; also, that a handle having a polygonal ferrule has been used, and, likewise, that a socket has been used in combination with a plug provided with ascrew entering the lower end of the bandle. All of this I do not claim; but
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- The combination, with the socket A, having bottom piece, B, and opening (J, of the handle F, having a square ferrule, G, covering the end of said handle, and having a screw-threaded opening, so as to form a nut adapted to receive the screw-threaded stem or shank E of a plug, D, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that Iclaim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J AS. A. HAMILTON, JOHN C. HEMMETER.
