A. KROST. MATGHER. HEAD CUTTER VISE. No. 427,517. Patented May 6, 1890;
V V Inventor.
fivzwjmmv UNITED STATES PATENT DFFIC ANTHONY KROST, OF BUFFALO, NEIV YORK, ASSIGNQR OF O NE-HALF TO JULIUS DIETZ, OF SAME PLACE.
MATCHER-HEAD CU-TTER-VISE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 427,517, dated May 6, 1890.
Application filed February 21, 1890. Serial No. 341,320. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANTHONY KROST, a citi zen of the United States, residing in Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Matcher-Head Cutter-Vises, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to produce a convenient device for sharpening matcherheads or for other similar purposes, all of which will be fully and clearly hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of avise made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional elevation, showing the means for tightening or releasing the portion for holding a matcher-head or other device for being operated upon. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the greater portion of the device, and Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation for illustrating that portion of the device over which the matcher or other head is put and held in place while being operated upon or sharpened.
In said drawings, 1 represents the base, to which is rigidly attached or formed in one piece with it an upright supporting portion 2. Through the supporting portion 2 is an opening 3, (shown in Fig. 8,) through which passes a hollow cylindrical portion 1, having an interior screw-thread 5, and at the outer end (rigidly secured to it or forming a part of it) is a hollow cylindrical portion 6, located thereon, so that the two together are in the shape of a T, or substantially so. Its obj ect is to receive the shank 12 of the matcherhead holder which passes through it. The hollow T'portion 8 is provided on the part 7 with a screw portion 10, (see Fig. 3,) which is adapted to screw into the interior screwthreaded portion 5. A washer 11, resting against a shoulder 011 the part 7, prevents it from being drawn too far in to the part 4:. The handle 9 passes easily back and forth through the portion 8.
lVhen the several parts are drawn up tight by the handle 9, which passes through the tubular portion 8, and thereby tightens the screw portion 10, one side of the shank 12 rests against a washer 13 and the other side is held by the portion 6, substantially as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
The matcher-head-holdi11g device consists of the shank 12, its head portion 14:, and a forwardlyprojecting tubular holding portion 15. It is provided with an. interior screw-thread adapted to receive the screw portion 16, having a cone-shaped end 17, (see Fig. 5,) and at its opposite end a handle 18. This handle 18 is omitted in Fig. 1. In the top of the holding portion 15 is a hole, through which passes a short plug 19, having a coneshaped inner end 20.
From the above construction it will be seen that by screwing the end portion 17 forward against the cone-shaped end 20 of the short plug 19 the plug 19 will be forced outward, and thereby rigidly fasten a cutter-head onto the portion 15, so that it will be held se curely while being operated upon or sharpened. In operating with this vise the cutterhead is secured in place, as above mentioned, and the several parts tightened, as hereinbefore described. It will be noticed that a cutterhead can be held by this means in any desired position. It can be moved either in the direction of the arrows or f, (shown in Fig. 1,) or, as shown in Fig. 4, it may be turned around on the shank 12 in either direction, (shown by the arrows g or h,) so that any position may be obtained that may be required in sharpening or otherwise operating upon or repairing a cutter-head.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a matcher-head cutter-vise, the combination, with a supporting-frame, of a screw portion, a handle for operating it, an internal screw-threaded portion adapted to receive the screw portion and provided with a hollow cross portion to receive the shank of the cutter-head-holding device for rigidly holding it in place in any required position, and a cutter-head holder having a means for rigidly securing the cutter-head thereto, sub
stantially as described.
2. In a matcher-head cutter-Vise, the comto screw into the portion 15, so that its conbination of a cutter-head holder, consisting ical end will engage with the conical end of of the hollow cylindrical portion 15, a short the short plug 19, for the purposes described. 10
