GEORGE W. NllTZ, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
DENTAL-TOOL HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,211, dated June 18, 1895.
Application filed October 18, 1894. serial No. 526,302. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. NUTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of W'ilmington, Delaware, have invented certain Improvements in Dental-Tool Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to so construct a holder for dental tools as to provide for the secure application of the tool to the holder without the necessity of using pliers or other gripping implements for the purpose of securing the tool into place. This object I attain in the manner hereinafter set forth, refence being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents, on an enlarged scale, a view, partly in elevation and partly in section, of a tool-holder constructed in accordance with my invention, the tool being shown in place; and Fig. 2 is a View of the parts detached from each other.
The shank a of the tool has a rounded conical or other suitably shaped base 1) beyond which projects a threaded stem d which is adapted to an internally threaded opening formed in the upper portion of the handlef, but instead of also forming in this threaded portion of the handle the socket for the re ception of the conical base I) of the tool, as usual, I reduce in diameter the upper portion of the handle and fit upon said reduced portion a sleeve g, which is longitudinally confined to the handle by means of a set screw 1; adapted to a groove m, the socket n for the reception of the conical portion of the tool being formed at the outer end of this sleeve.
In applying the tool to the handle the threaded stem of the toolis screwed into the threaded upper end of the handle until the conical base of the tool finds its bearingin the socket n, the sleeve g being then held and prevented from turning by the fingers of one hand, while the handle f is turned by the fingers of the other hand, the effect of which operation will be to draw the conical base of the tool stem firmly down to its seat in the socket, the friction of the tool base in the socket being suflt cient to prevent turning of the tool with the handle when the sleeve 9 is prevented from turning.
It will, of course, be understood that so far as regards the action of the parts in securing the tool to the handle it isimmaterial whether the sleeve g is longitudinally confined to the handle or not, but such longitudinal confinement is preferable, as it prevents the sleeve from being accidentally detached or mislaid and lost. 4
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the-tool having a basewith threaded and contracted stem projecting beyond the same, with the. handle internally threaded for receiving said stem,and a sleeve mounted so as to turn upon the handle, said sleeve having the socket for the base of the tool, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the toolhaving abase with threaded and contracted stem projecting beyond the same, the handle having a threaded opening for receiving said stem, the sleeve free to turn on said handle and having a socket for the reception of the base of the tool, and means for confining said sleeve longitudinally to the handle, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses;
. GEO. W. NUTZ.
