To all whom it may concern: a Pn'rnn E. JOHANSON, residing at \Varren, in the county of \Varren and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Universal Tool-Holders, of which the following is a' specification.
i My invention is an improved holder for screw drivers, gimlets, bits, chisels, and other similar tools, and theinvcntion primarily has for its obj 'ect'to provide a holder having a handle socket in'one end, and a tool socket in the other end, the tool socket being preterably of tapering form and communicatingwith a cross slotinto which a projection on the tool shank tits to prevent swiveling ot' the tool in the socket, in which socket the tool may be heldwith retaining friction or by a latch device, if desired.
l The invention also includes those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will. be first fully described, then specifically pointed out in the appended-claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in whieh':-

1 represents the holder, which has a handle socket 2 in its rear end, and a prefe ably tapering tool socket ,il in its front end. Between. the sockets 2 audit, the holder is transversely hored at Hand slotted at 5 to form a key hole slot as it 2 an enlarged ,vertlc'al longitudinal section ol: the tool were, the slot 5 projecting slightly into' and communicating with the tool socket 3, as best shown in Fig. 2. The tool (which it should he understood. maybe of any desired kind) is provided with a shank G to snugly it into the socket 3, and it is also provided with a flat projection 7 to enter the slot 5 and thereby prevent swiveling ot the tool in the socket 3. I prefer to form the socket 3 and tool shank 6 of a tapering shape, whereby the tool will be held in the socket with retaining "friction, and, if desired a latch device may also be employed to retain the tool. The construction of latch device that l. prefer, best indicated in Fig. 5 of the drawing, by reference to which it will heohserved that the holder 1 is bored andtapped at S to receive the screw 9 and spring 10, and it is further bored to receive and hold a latch ball 11 that enters a recess 19 in the projection 7 of the tool shank 6 to latch the tool in the holder.

Ordinarily the tool may be removed by simply pulling it out of the socket, but in practice it not infrequently occurs that the tool will become so tightly set in the socket as to make its removal by a simple rmlling operation exceedingly dilli cult. In oiiler that the tool can he removed from the holder in these cases I provide a tool releasing rod 13 that fits 'lreel'y into the hole 4!, and has a flat end 14- that can he pro-jectedinto the. slot 5, so that by using the rod 13 as a lever as shown in Fig. 7, the tool can be forced out of the hlfilder.
\Vhen additional leverage is required to turn the holder as when a boring tool is being used, the rod 13 may he pas-red into the hole 4:, see Fig. 7, and while the oper ator grasps the handle 15 in one hand to hold the tool to the work, he can at the same time apply a turning riorce lo the tool through the medium of the rod 13.
From the foregoing (leserhition taken in connection with the accompanying drawa tool in the holder it is r ings, it is thought the complete construction operation and advantages of the invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art.
