Application filed April 28,
To alli/)710m z'tmajt/ 00m-cra Be it known that l. SAXTON vl. MORGAN, a citizen ot the TUnited States, and a resident ot .filbanyg in the county ot Green and State oi: lllisconsii'n have invented a new and use- .tul improvement in lllae'azine Braces, of which the 'following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
illy invention relates to improvements in nag zine braces.,y and .it consists in the combina ionsj constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed,
in object oit my invent-ion is to provide a device of the character described that is adapted to hold or house a plurality ottools, such as drills, screw driver bits, countersinks` and the like and to hold a selected one ot the tools in operative position.
A. further object ot my invention is to provide a devi je ot the character described that has a novel means ttor releosably maintaining a tool in operative posi! on.
A further obi ect of' my invention is to provide a magazine brace that is simple in ronstruction and operation, thoroughly etfective tor the purpose intended and practical connnercially.
il. 'further object ot my invention is to provi de a device oit the character described that embodies a magazine tor extra tools and means Jfor luilding` a selected tool in operative position.
@ther objects and advantages will appear in the following specification. and the novel features of tie invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention illustrated in the accompanying drawings, toi-ming part ot this application. in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation ot the device.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged central section through a fragmentary portion ot the device,
Fie'. 3 Fin: 27
Fig. 4 is a section along; the line L1--4- of Fig. 2,
Fin'. 5 is a view showing' various tools adapted to be used in the device, and
Fig'. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 2 showing` a modified 'form ot the device.
ln carrying out my invention. l provide a brace handle 1 having1 a knob 2 secured to one end thereoic by a screw 3 or other suitable means. The other end oit the handle 1 is arranged to enter a transverse opening 4 is a section along the line 33 of Specification of 'Letters Patent.

through the wall ot a cylinder 5 to project into a slot 6 in a spindle 7 that is disposed in the central bore 8 of the cylinder. The handle 1 is secured to the cylinder 5 in any suitable manner as by welding` and the spindle 7 is consequently iaintained in adjusted position in the central bore 8 on account ot the engagement of the adjacent end 01"' the handle therewith.
The cylinder 5 is formed with a plurality ot sockets or compartments 9 arranged in a circle about the central bore 8 intermediate the inner and outer walls oi the cylinder and extending inwardly trom the outer end of the cylinder. Each of the compartments 9 is adapted to receive a portion of a tool 10, such as those shown in F 5, and the cylinder theretore constitutes a magazine.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood. The several tools adapted to be used with the brace handle 1 are positioned in the compartments 9 of the magazine cylinder and project beyond the end of the cylinder into the space betvveen the cap 15 and' the projecting portion of the spindle. When it is desired to use any one of the tools, the cap is removed and the shank of the selected tool is inserted in the socket 17. l/Vhen the cap 15 is replaced, the pressure of the end Wall 14 against the ball member 22 will force the latter into engagement With the socket 23 to hold the tool irmly against longitudinal movement relative to the spindle. As stated in the foregoing, the tool is held against rotatable movement relative to the spindle on account of the engagement of the shoulder 18 With the Wall of the recess 19 in the innerk end of the socket 17. When the cap 15 has been removed, the tool may be Withdrawn from the socket 17 since the ball member 22 may then be moved outwardly along the opening 21 until a portion thereof projects beyond the outer Wall of the head 12. It Will thus be seen that the several tools Which may be used in the device are available for use at anytime and may be selectively placed in operative engagement With the brace handle. The eXtra tools are stored in a compact space and do not inany Way interfere With the operation of the device in the usual manner.
Referring novv to Fig. 6, I show a modified `form of the device in rwhich the shank of the selected tool`r 10 yis held against longitudinal movement in the socket 17 by the engagement therewith of a curved offset portion 30 of aspring member 31 that is disposed in a slot or groove 32 in the Wall of the enlarged portion of the spindle 7, being secured to the latter adjacent its inner endin any suitable manner as by a rivet 33. The curved offset portion 30 of the spring member 31 is arranged to project through an opening 3e into the bore 17 for engagement With the socket or cavity 23 in the shank of the tool. The spring member 31 is maintained in the position shown by the engagement of the end portion 14 of the cap 15 with the outer end portion 35 of the spring member when the cap 15 is in the position shown. Obviously, the tool lO may be Withdrawn from the socket 17 when L.
the cap 15 has been removed, since the oil"- set portion 30 of the spring 31 may then be forced outwardly. The remaining parts of the modified form of the device are identical With Vcorresponding parts of the preferred formlof the device and therefore require no further description. The same reference numerals have been used to denote like parts throughout the several views.
l claim:
1. The combination with a brace having a relatively long spindle for operatively holding a Work engaging tool, of a cylindrical tool magazine mountedl concentric said spindle, said magazine being split transversely andl its parts arranged for separation to permit the removal of tools therefrom.
2. The combination With a brace having a relatively long spindle for operatively holding la Work engaging tool, of a cylindrical tool magazine mounted concentric said spindle, said magazine being split transversely andhaving one of its parts securely fixed to said spindle and the other of its parts arranged for removal from said spindle to permit the entrance of tools to said `magazine.
