T0 all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JAMES FRANCIS BAEr LETT, of the city of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brushes, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specilication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to brushes.

The object is to produceabrush which shall be of ready construction, readily put together y and taken apart, comparatively inexpensive, and in which the bristles may be readily reinovedand renewed. With this object in view the invention consists in a brush embodying the improvements hereinafter described, fully shown in the drawings, and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A represents a nietallicband of anysuiiable shape, and of a siZe to hold the required quantity of bristles. In the said band is secured a piece of wood or other material, B, called a bottompiece or top piece,7 and having a centrally-located plain opening, C, for the passage of the screw hereinafter mentioned, and of a diameter great enough to allow the screw to slip up and down in 'it without engagement of the threads. Said bottom piece is of such thickness or has the band applied to it in such a manner as to leave only asufiicieut portion of the rim of the band projecting to obtain a firm hold uponthe bristles.

D is a center piece in the form of a Wedge, plug, button, or shell, of any desired shape suitable for the purpose and kind of brush iiitended, which has in it or through it, as may be desired, a screw-threaded opening, E. The size and shape of the center piece is such as to leave spaces a a between its sides and the sides 'of the band A, when the screw (hereinafter mentioned) is inserted into the screw-threaded opening E.

F is a headless screw, so threaded at one end as to screw or bedriven a proper distance into the wooden handle G, and so threaded at the other end as to be capable of being received in the threaded opening E of the center piece, there being, if desired, aplain portion between the two differing screwthreaded ends.

Gis the handle, one end of which may be provided with a ferrule, H, of any desirable' shape, said handle having an opening either screwthreaded or plain to receive the screw F.

To put the brush together, the bottom piece, B, is placed inside the band A,v leaving asufcient portion or enough rim proj ectingto obtain a iirni hold upon the bristles. Then the 'rim is filled with bristles, and a rod or wire is passed up through the opening C and up through the bristles, the center piece, D, being adjusted upon this rod or wire and guided to its proper position centrally amid the bristles thereby. The guide rod or wire is then withdrawn, and one end of the screw F is inserted into the threaded opening inthe center piece, when, the other end being driven, screwed, or otherwise fastened in the handle, by means of this handle, as by simply turning it, the center piece is forced up tightly within the rim, and the bristles are thus securely clamped and held. If necessary, the center piece may be held with a pair of pinchers 0r some suitable tool, in order to keep it securely in place while the handle is being attached or detached. By changing the shape of the band, bottom piece, and center piece, a brush of any desired shape may be made.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a brush, the combination, with a top piece or bottom piece having a perforation, of a metal band, the lower edge of which extends below the lower face of theto p or bottom piece, a screw to pass through the perforation in the top or bottoni piece, and a center piece adapted IOO to be drawn up within the cap by the screw to hold the bristles securely therein, substantially as specified.

2. The combination, with a piece of wood or other substance forming a bottom or top piece, of a surrounding band, one edge of which eX- tends beyond that face of the bottom or top piece which will be theinner face in use, forniing a projecting rim, a center piece adapted to be drawn within said rim, and a screw adapted to have one set of threads, those at one end engaging with the center piece, and the other set-those at the other end-engaging With a Suitable handle, as set forth.

3. The combination, with a piece ofwood or other substance forming a bottom or top piece, of a surrounding band, one edge of which extends beyond that face of the bottom or top piece which will be the inner facein use, forming a projecting rim, a center piece adapted to be dra-wn within said rim, a screw, one set of threads thereof being adapted to engage with a center piece and constituting a metalscrew, the other set constituting a wood-screw, and a suitable handle, asshown and described.
