Description

n. LEWELLEN.
GARBAGE CAN.
v APPLICATION FILED 0CT.7,1919.

"WIM/@ UNITED STATES PATENT ori-ica RosA B. LEWELLEN, or I-rYLToN, TEXAS.
GARBAGE-GAN.
To all 'Lo/0am t may concern lie it known that l, RossA B. LnwnLLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hylton, in the county ofNolan and b'tate of Texas, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Garbage-Cans, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a garbage can and the like and has for its object Vthe production of a simple and efficient means for containing garbage and facilitating the opening of the lid of the garbage can.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient buffer means for `preventing the sliding of the door or cover when the door or cover is closed.
WV ith these and other objects in view this invention consists 'of novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
ln the drawings Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the can.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of F ig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a vertical section taken on line 4 4 of F ig. 3.
F ig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 2.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that V1 designates the body of the can which tapers toward the bottom thereof and is provided with a rearwardly extending spout 2 at its lower end. This rearwardly extending discharge pipe 2 is adapted to eX- tend through the partition 3 or wall of the dwelling in which the can is placed. The can is preferably 4placed fiat against the wall 3 and held in engagement therewith by means of securing screws 4 which pass through the edge 6 of the can 1 and engage the wall or partition 3 for firmly holding the can in a set position.
One side of the can 1 is provided with a dove-tailed vertically extending channel 6 struck from the metal constituting the body 1 thereby producing inclined sides 7. door operating rod 8 is slidably mounted within the dove-tailed channel 6 and this door operating rod 8k is preferably dovetailed in cross sections and is provided with' Specification*ofiLetters Patent. Patented Sept 14, 1&20. Application filed October 7, 1.919. i y
Serial No. 329,013.
as the treadle 11 is depressed, the lid lifting rod 14 will be moved lvertically thereby swinging the lid 15` to an open position. The lid 15 is hingedly secured to the body l by means of the suitable spring hinge 16 which spring hinge 16 is adapted to hold the lid or door 15 `firmly in a closed position.
it. buffer spring 16 is secured firmly to the side of the can 1 by means of the securing bolt 17 and this buffer spring 16 carries a rubber cap 18 which is adapted to firmly engage the edge of the cover 15 and hold the cover or lid 1:'3 in a closed position and also prevent the lid from slamming or raising an unpleasant, noise when the lid is closed.
By considering F ig. 5 it will be seen that a longitudinally extending slot 19 is formed` in one side of the body 1 in which lits the bolt 17 whereby the buffer spring 16 may be firmly held in body.
It of course should be understood that the discharge spout 2 may be connected to a sewer or other means of disposal of the garbage or may be connected "to a receptacle such as a barrel and the like. y i
What is claimed is 1. A garbage can of the class described comprising a body, said body provided with a substantially dove-tailed channel formed in one side thereof, a door operating rod reciprocatably mounted within said channel and being substantially dove-tailed in cross sections, a lid carried by said body, `the upper end of said lifting rod adapted to engage said lid for facilitating the raising of said lid to an open position, a treadle carriedby said body projecting under said lifting rod for raising said lifting rod as the outer end of said treadle is depressed, and a buffer adapted to be engaged by said door.
2. A garbage can of the class described,
an-adj usted position upon the an inwaldiy-extending channel formed in its side, zi door-operating rod tightly iitting said channel, a door hinged upon seid body and overlianging and Covering tlie upper end of said channel, seid rod being adapted to engage the innei face of the door and raise the sinne When moved upwardly in said channel,
enel means engaging the lower end of Said rod and det-ached therefrom for manually operating said rod to slide the seme in the 10 channel and thereby open the door.
ln testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
