rammar rortsnnnnrrns.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENA WALKER T HAYER, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Springfield, in the county of 'Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Barrettes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates .to barrettes, and more particularly to attachments therefor for securely holding up what are known as scolding looks.
The object of the invention is to provide a detachable attachment of this character on which the locks to be secured may be wound and the tongue of the barrette then connected with the attachment and passed through the hair and secured.
Another object is to so construct such an attachment that it will prevent all possibility of the locks wrapped thereon from becoming loosened.
lVith the foregoing and other objects, in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spiritof the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a rear elevation of a barrette equipped with this attachment,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the attachment detached, and
a Fig. 4 is a similar view showing another form of the attachment. applied, the barrettes being shown in dotted lines.
In the embodiment illustrated, a barrette 1 of ordinary construction is shown having the usual tongue 2 and catch 3 for securing it. This tongue is in the form of a flat strip twisted at its pivoted inner end as shown at 4 so that the body portion thereof will be arranged parallel with the body of the barrette when in operative position. 7
The attachment shown in Figs. 1 to 3,
which constitutes this invention is shown in Specification of Letters Pam; P te t Ju 15, 192
Application filed June 5., 1919. Serial N0.'302,014. i I i the form of a strip 5 having its ends 6 bent at an obtuse angle and apertured as shown at 7 for the passage therethrough of the tongue 2 when in use.
In the use of this attachment, the locks to be secured by the barrette are wrapped around the bar 5 and then the tongue 2 is passed through the ends 6 of said bar with the wrapped bar positioned between the tongue and the barrette. The barrette is then engaged with the hair in the usual manner and the tongue secured by the catch 3.
In the form shown in Fig. 4, the attachment 5 is constructed from a piece of wire, the ends of which are welded or otherwise secured together so as to present no obstructions which would be likely to entangle in ate to effectively'hold loose locks of hair up off the wearers neck.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which This wire loop is then twisted as the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. The combination with a barrette having a tongue; of a lock securing attachment carried by the tongue and comprising an elongated member having laterally oflset obliquely disposed facewise extending aperturedends for the reception of the tongue.
2. The combination with a barrettehaving a tongue; of an attachment comprising a narrow elongated strip having openings in its opposite ends,"said ends being bent at an obtuse angle facewise of the strip said ends extending in the same direction to facilitate 10 the passage therethrough of the barrette' tongue and to position the body portion of the strip in laterally spaced relation to the tongue.
.In testimony whereof I aflix my signature I in presence of two witnesses.
