DOOR FASTENER.
APPLICATION FILED MAR.4,1916- 1,336,505. ted Apr. 13, 19200 w vbneooeo HARRY K. BUGGELN, OF CORONA, NEW YORK.
DOOR-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 13, 1920.
Application filed March 4, 1916. Serial No. 82,178.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY K. BUGGELN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corona, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap'pertains to make and use the same;
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a door fastener and one of its objects is the provision of a device of this character, which shall be simple, durable and efficient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
Another object of this invention is to provide a pair of substantially L-shaped brackets, one secured to the door jamb and the other to a door for receiving a padlock to prevent the door from being opened by an unauthorized person.
A further object of this invention is to provide a novel manner of securing the L- shaped brackets to the door and door jamb, whereby it would be impossible for a person to remove the fastening means when the door is closed and locked, either from the interior of the building or from the exterior.
A still further object of this invention is to provide the L-shaped brackets so positioned upon the door jamb and door that the L-shaped bracket carried by the door will engage the L-shaped bracket carried by the door jamb when the door is in a closed position, thus providing a metal working surface for the door to engage and will prevent the door and door jamb from becoming worn.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my in vention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a building, having a hinged door, illustrating my invention applied thereto,
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectibnal view of my invention, illustrating the manner of attaching it to the door and door jamb,
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the L- shaped bracket removed from the door jamb, and Fig. & is a similar view, illustrating the L-shaped bracket which is carried by the door.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a building, having a door 2 hinged thereto, and to which my invention is applied.
A substantially L-shaped bracket 3 is secured to the door jamb t by screws 5 and 6 passing through counter-sunk apertures 7 and 8. The L-shaped bracket 3 extends beyond the wall of the building 1 and is provided with an aperture 9 to receive a padlock 10.
A substantially L-shaped bracket 11 is provided with counter sunk apertures 12 and 13 for receiving screws 14 and 15 for attaching the Lshaped bracket 11 to the door 2. The L-shaped bracket 11 is secured to the door at a point, whereby the arm portion 16 will be in parallel alinement with the arm portion 17 of the L-shaped bracket 3 when the door 2 is in a closed po sition and the arm portion 18 of the L shaped bracket 11 will be engaged by the arm portion 19 of the L-shaped bracket 3. The arm portion 16 of the L-shaped bracket 11 is provided with an opening 20 to cooperate with the opening 9 for receiving the padlock 10 to lock the door when in a closed position by the padlock 10.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it will be noted, that it is impossible for an unauthorized person to remove the screws 5, 6 and 141 when the door is in a closed position and locked by the padlock 10. As the screws 6 and 14 are carried by the parallel arm portions 17' and 16 and it will therefore be impossible to, remove them when the padlock has been locked through the openings 9 and 20 of the L-shaped brack ets 3 and 11. The screw 5 cannot be removed from the door jamb by a person within the interior of the building, as the arm portion 18 overlies the arm portion 17 of the L-shaped bracket 3, which will prevent the withdrawal of the screw 5. It will also be seen that the L-shaped brackets 3 and 11 will prevent the door and door j amb from becoming worn by the continnous opening and closing of the door 2. It
will further be seen that each bracket presents a hasp plate having an angularly related attaching flange.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is A door fastener comprising a hasp plate provided at one end with a shackle receiving eye and at its other end with an angularly related relatively short flange, said plate and flange being provided with screw receiving openings to permit the plate to be secured to the inner side of the door casing and the flange to the front side of the door jamb by usaasos angularly related screws, and a second hasp plate provided near one end with a shackle receiving eye and at its other end with a relatively long angularly related flange, said second plate and its flange being provided with screw receiving openings to permit the plate to be secured to the free edge of the door and the flange to the inner side of the door by angularly related screws, the flange of the second plate being adapted when the door is closed to engage the flange of the first plate to prevent wear of the jamb and to cause a full registration of the shackle receiving eyes.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
