Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 133,603, dated December 3, 1872.

To all whom it may concern:

' Be it known that I, RICHARD HANDLEY THOMAS, of Kids Grove, near Stoke-on-Trent,

England, have invented a new and. Improved Chalk-Holder for Billiards, of which the following is a specification: I,

My invention consists of a hollow cylinder with a detachable cap at one end adapted to hold a cylinder of chalk and admit the end of the cue to be chalked by bearing the chalk against it and revolving the holder by the fingers. The cap is large enough to receive one end of the cylinder, which is somewhat reduced to fit snugly in it, and is fastened to the cylinder by a pin and spring, which also fasten the piece of chalk in the holder, the pin projecting through it into the chalk. The

'cap may also screw onthe cylinder ifpreferred.

Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved chalk-holder, and a side elevation of a section of a cue to which the holder is applied as for chalking it, the section being taken on the line at w of Fig. 2'; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section ot Fig. 1 on the line 3 3 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

A is a hollow cylinder, of metal, with abore large enough to admit the tip end of a billiard-cue, and of an ylength that may be found most convenient. B is a cap fitted on one end by receiving the end of the cylinder in it, the cylinder being reduced in size for the purpose, as shown at G; or the end of the cap may be fitted into the cylinder, the latter being enlarged therefor, and the cap being reduced;

both in a hole in each coinciding with the hole of the other, and the spring being attached to the side of the cap at one end and having the pin attached to its other end for holding it in the holes. The spring is applied to the cap in an annular recess so as to be flush with the surface, and it has the end F bent outward sothat it can be used for pulling out the pin to disconnect the cap and the cylinder when it is desired to remove the cap or put in a piece of chalk. This pin is made longer than is required for holding the cap merely in order to project through the cylinder and engage the chalk .to hold it in the cylinder. I also propose in some cases to have the cap screw on or into the cylinder, as a means of fastening it more securely than by the pin alone.

The advantages of this chalk-holder are obvious to alliskilled in such matters. Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat;
