Description

C. H. KOCH Aug. 27, 1940.
BILLIARD CUE Filed July 18, 1939 e/fs/f/goa ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 27, 1940 aziigso PATENT oFFicE BILLIARD CUE Charles H. Koch, Bristol, Pa... assignor of onehalf to James A. Schell, Bristol, Pa.
Application July 18, 1939, Serial No. 285,158
2 Claims. (Cl. 273-70) The present invention relates to new and improved billiard cues and more particularly to a means for supporting the tip or cushion thereon.
The primary object of the invention resides in the provision of an improved cue tip construction, whereby the same may be positioned upon billiard cues in a manner to prevent the tip proper from becoming readily separated from its associated parts during the use of the cue.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a cue tip that may be quickly attached to or detached from the billiard cue when replacement for this part is necessary.
The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of the application.
In the drawing:
Figure l is an enlarged sectional view of the end of a billiard cue showing the tip in position.
Figure 2 is an explodediperspective view of the one tip and its associated parts.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the reduced end of the body of the cue.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of the member shown in Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of the cushion removed from the cue, and
Figure 6 is a top plan view of the removable ferrule through which the prongs of the cue extend when attaching the tip to the cue.
Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, the body of a one is indicated generally by the reference numeral 8 and it will be noted that the end thereof to which the tip is attached has been reduced in diameter to form a dowel 9. Opposed sides of the dowel 9 are formed with fiat surfaces It with the end of the dowel having attached thereto a spring keeper ll of inverted U-form, the same being secured by means of a screw or the like I2. It will be noted that the leg portions l2 of the keeper H are disposed at an angle overlapping the flat surfaces in of the dowel, said side portions I3 adapted to be engaged by the notched ends 14 of the fastening elements l5 carried by the tip It in a manner to be hereinafter more fully described.
A tapered ferrule I1 is adapted to be disposed over the dowel 9 and to rest upon the shoulder l8 thereof, with the exterior diameter of the ferrule being equal to the diameter of the body of the cue thereby presenting a finished appearance. The ferrule I! may be formed of a plastic material and during the fabrication of the same the upper end [9 being of solid formation will have diametrically opposed openings 20 formed therein for communicating with the interior of said ferrule and adapted to receive the fastening elements 15.
The tip l6 comprises a cushion member 22 which may be of any desired material, as suitable leather and will have the hooked ends 2| of the fastening elements l5 embedded therein as more clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing. The fastening elements It being carried by the tip I6 will extend downwardly and are received in the diametrically opposed openings 20 of the ferrule head 19.
In order to place the tip on the cue 8, the
' ferrule I1 is first removed and said tip with the fastening elements I5 disposed through the openings 20 is placed thereon. The ferrule H is then slipped over the dowel 9 with the free ends of the fastening elements l5 sliding over the shoulder portions l3 of the keeper H. When the ferrule I! contacts the shoulder 18 the notched portions 14 will snap into engagement with the shoulder portions l3 thus locking the cushion member in position. When desiring to replace the tip it is merely necessary to rotate the ferrule I! with respect to the one 8 which will cause disengagement of the fastening elements l5 with the keeper l3 allowing the ferrule and cushion member Hi to be removed.
It will be readily seen that the tip [6 and ferrule I! may be readily positioned in a simple and easy manner and that they will be securely retained in close contact with the one 8. Removal and replacement of the tip is thus expeditiously performed.
Also it will be understood, of course, by those skilled in the art that variations in the hereinabove described device involving the substitution of substantial equivalents forthe devices described are intended to be comprehended within the spirit of the present invention and that the invention is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to the precise construction described and,
. therefore, such changes and modifications may be made therein as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claims.
What is claimed is: l
1. A billiard cue comprising a body having one end thereof reduced to form a dowel, the upper end of said dowel being formed with a flat surface on opposed sides thereof, an inverted substantially U-shaped member attached to the upper end of said dowel having arms depending at an angle and overlapping said opposed sides, a ferrule surrounding said reduced end for concealing said member, a cushion tip adapted to be seated upon the closed end of said ferrule, and means carried by said cushion tip for engagement with the depending arms of said member for locking the same on said ferrule, said means comprising fastening elements adapted to project through said ferrule for snap engagement with said arms.
'2. A billiard cue comprising a body having one end thereof reduced to form a dowel, the upper end of said dowel being formed with a flat; surface 1 on opposed sides thereof, an inverted substantially U-shaped member attached to the upper end of said dowel having arms depending at an angle and overlapping said opposed sides, a hollow ferrule having its upper and closed surrounding said reduced end for concealing said member, a cushion tip adapted to be seated upon the closed end of said ferrule, and means carried by said cushion tip for engagement with the depending arms of saidmember for locking the same on said ferrule, said means comprising fastening elements adapted to project through openings formed in the upper end of said ferrule for snap engagement with said arms.
