To au whom, it' may concern:

Be it known that we, ROMEO GHEZZI and VIRGINIO BIANCHI, citizens of the United States, and residents of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cue-Tip Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to improvements in devices for attaching tips to billiard or similar cues; and the object is to provide a simple device attached to the ordinary leather tip by means of which the tip may be readily attached to a cue and as readily detached therefrom when necessary.

Ve will describe a cue-tip fastener embodying our invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all theA figures.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a cue, showing a tip attached thereto by means of a device embodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a tip and fastener. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an inner end View of the tip. Figs. 6, '7, 8, 9, and 10 are sections showing modifications. Fig. 11 is an inverted plan of the base shown in Fig. 10.

Referring to the drawings, 10 designates the end of a billiard-cue, to which a tip consisting of the yielding leather portion 11 and the hard base 12, of leather or other suitable material, is attached. The cue end is provided with a longitudinal bore 13 to receive the fastening device,consisting of spring-wire bent to form two divergent portions 14 15, adapted to engage with the wall of the bore. The ends of the fastening device, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, are inserted through a slot 16, formed in the base of the tip, and then bent outward, as at 17. The ends are prevented from moving toward each other by means of a metal clip 18, which has its ends turned around the members and its central portion 19 bent to form a block to engage between the two members of the fastener.

The end of the cue is formed with a seat to be turned inward to engage in the basepor- Y tion of the tip, as indicated at 22 in Fig. 7.

To prevent wear,we may place a metal bushing 23 in the bore 13, as indicated in Fig. 6, and instead of attaching the fastening device to the tip as above described we may attach it as indicated in Fig. 8, in which the

14 and 15 terminate in sharpened points 24,that maybe pressed into the opposite sides of the tip between the

portions

11 and 12.

The tip,with the fastening device thereon, may be an article of manufacture in itself, as may also the tip-end portion of the cue having Jthe longitudinal bore, and this tip-end section of the cue may be removably engaged with the body portion 25 of the cue. It is obvious by this construction of tip and fastening device that it is only necessary Whendesired to supply a cue with a tip to force the fastening device into the bore 13, so that the

members

14 and 15 of the fastening device will engage tightly-against the wall of said bore. As before stated, the wall of the seat at the end of the cue will prevent any possible lat eral movementof the tip.

As shown in Figs. 10 and 11, the base 12 is formed with a transverse slot 26, extending entirely across its lower face, and the upper ends of the

members

14 and 15 of the fastening device are bent outward at a right angle, so as to be seated in said slot, and are also bent upward and then inward, the pointed extremities of said members entering the portion 11 of the tip.

Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A billiard-cue,having a longitudinal bore at its tip end, a seat formed at the end of the cue, a tip adapted to engage in said seat, and a spring yielding fastening device attached spring-Wire bent to form opposite divergent portions, the ends being turned inward and engaging in the eue-tip at opposite sides, subx 5 stantiaily as speoied.
