Beit known that I, HARRY C. FENTON, a citizen of the UnitedI States, residing at Mooretield, in the county of Frontier and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Holders for Pliers, of which the following is a speciiication, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.V i
This invention relates `to holders for pliers and the like, particularly adapted for detachable connections to outer garments or mechanics and the like.
Heretofore it has been found that mechanics employ a very inconvenient and impractical means for attaching the pliers to the outer garment, in order that they may be handy for use. @ne of the many ways that has been used to attach a pair of pliers to an outer garment is by means of connecting a piece of wire or chain or the like between the garment and the rholder to one of the handles of the pliers, or a piece of cord, necessitating the mechanic untying the cord or untwisting the wire, or disconnecting the chain from the pliers to. permit them to be used, and then after used to reattach them.
'It is the aim in the present invention to obviate such an inconvenient and impractical method of carrying ,the pliers, ask connected to outer garments.
For example, it is the aim to provide what may be termed a metallic pocket, which may be detachably connected to the outer garment, for the reception of the pliers, there being improved means for holding the pliers in the pocket, to prevent displacement of the pliers in case the -mechanic leans over.
lThe invention lfurther aims to aiieord spring means or a spring latch, ot a very simple and practical construction, -iter retaining the pliers in place in the pocket, and a device such as herein shown and de scribed including a slidable member,V which may coperate with the spring latch to retain it in a fixed position, in the path of a portion' of the pliers, in order to retain them in place.
The invention further aims to provide various forms or constructions of metallic pocket, in order to accommodate pliers of diiierent shapes and configurations.
Vhile the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that as a result or' a reduction of the invention to a more practical form for commercial purposes, the invention may be susceptible to changes, and the right to these changes is claimed, provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.

Referring more especially to the drawings, l designates a metallic pocket, which may be any suitable shape or configuration, preferably adapted for receiving a pair of pliers 2, such as shown. Secured at 3 to the wall of the metallic pocket is a spring member l provided with a lug 5, normally protruding through an opening 6 in the wall of the pocket. This lug 5 is positioned in the path of a portion or the pair of pliers, in order to retain the pliers in position. This is particularly accomplished when the lug 'i' of the oscillatory member 8 (which is pivoted at 9 to an extension wall 10) is in the path of that portion of the springmember 4. which carries the lng 5. This swinging or oscillatory member 8 has a projecting knob ll, which operates in an arcuate slot l2, the opposite ends or" the slot acting to limit the member 8 in its movement in either direction. The offset wall 10 is carried by the wall or the metallic pocket. lanen the pliers are in position in the pocket, the lng 5 being in the path of a portion of the pliers, the member S is positioned, so that the lug 7 is disposed in the path of the spring member 4, in order to prevent it from urging outwardly, in case a pulling action is imparted on the pliers for the purpose of camming past the lug 5. By moving the member S in one direction, removing the lug from the path of the spring member 4, will permit the spring member 4 to urge outwardly as the pliers are withdrawn from the rocket.
In I* ig. 4, a modified construction of plier retaining` means is disclosed. This modified construction comprises an opening 13 in the side wall of the metallic pocket, to receive the bowed part 14 of a leaf spring 15, which is riveted at 16 and 17 to the side wall of the metallic pocket. It is to be noted that one end ef this leaf spring has a slight sliding movement at the point where it is riveted. and this is due to the provision of the short slot 18. A headed pin is mounted in a pair of registering elongated slots 19 and 2O of the side wall ofthe pocket and one end of the leaf spring. The headed pin 21 when adjacent the lower end of the slot prevent-s the leaf spring from bowing outwardly, when an attempt is made to extract the pliers from the pocket. By preventing the spring from bowing outwardly the part 14 is retained in position in the opening 13. However, by moving the headed pin upwardly toward the rivet 16, it will be observed that the leaf spring is free'to bow or spring outwardly, when the pliers are being extracted from the pocket.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7 there are slight modifications of cross-sectional shapes of metallic pockets, which may be used for holding the pliers of various shapes and constructions. In Fig. 6, the metallic pocket is provided with offset portions 22, and the front and rear walls and the side walls are closed. Fig. 7, the front wall is partly open, as shown at 23. In Fig. 5, the wall of the pocket in cross-section is rectangular. A suitable safety pin or any other suitable fastening device 25 is carried by the outer face of the wall of the metallic pocket, for
fastening the pocket to the outer garment at any convenient location.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is:
1. The combination with a metallic holder or pocket for the reception of a pair of pliers, of a spring member carried by the wall of the pocket and provided with a retaining lug, the wall of the pocket having an opening through which the retaining lug enters to be positioned in the path of the pliers, to retain the pliers in the pocket, and means in the path of and cooperating with the spring member to retain the lug in engagement with the opening.
The combination with a metallic pocket for the reception of a pair of pliers provided with an opening at one of its side walls, of a spring member secured to the side wall of the pocket and having a proj ection engaging through the opening in the path of a part of the pliers, and means cooperating with the spring member to res tain the projection in the opening in the path of the pliers.
3. rthe combination with a metallic pocket having an opening in one of its side walls, of a leaf spring member having an end riveted to the side walls of the pocket for the reception of a pair of pliers and provided with means protruding through said opening, and a movable element cooperatively engaging the spring member to retain said means firmly in the opening in the path of theV pliers.
4. The combination with a metallic pocket for the reception of a pair of pliers, said pocket having an opening in one of its walls, yieldable means secured to said wall having an element engaging through the opening in the path of a part of the pliers, and means cooperating with the yieldable means to retain the element in said opening.
