Description

H. V. CROSS Nov. 9, 1948.
HONDA Filed Nov. 24, 1947 Fig. 4;
Fig.3.
Inventor Harold ll. Cross Patented Nov. 9, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE- HONDA Harold V. Cross, Miles City, Mont.
Application November 24, 1947, Serial No. 787,661
This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in hondas, that is to say, clip fasteners such as are commonly employed at the end of a lariat for slidably receiving the rope therein to form a noose, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a honda of the character herein described, which is particularly adapted to prevent cutting or otherwise damaging the rope when it slides therethrough. I
More specifically, the instant invention is an improvement in' the clip fastener which constitutes the subject matter of U. S. Patent No. 1,702,596, the improvement residing primarily in the provision of what may be referred to as an insert for protecting the rope. I
With such other objects of the invention in view as may be apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists of the arrangement and construction of parts substantially as shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevational view of the improved honda, showing the same in a closed position;
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the subject shown in Figure 1; i
Figure 3 is an elevational view similar to that shown in Figure 1, but illustrating the honda in an pen position, and
Figure 4 is an end view of the invention, taken in the direction of the arrow 4 in Figure 2.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a honda designated by the reference character I0, the same being a substantial equivalent of the device disclosed in the U. S. Patent No. 1,702,596, and including a pair of coacting, arcuate jaws I I formed at one end thereof with rings I2 to receive one end of a rope I3, the jaws II being of a channellike configuration and the remaining ends thereof being adapted to abut each other, as indicated by the line of abutment I4.
The conventional honda also includes a latch I5 which is pivoted to one of the jaws I I by means of a pin it, the latch I5 being engageable with a further pin I7, whereby the honda is retained in its closed position, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. A suitable flat spring I8 is secured to the jaw carrying the latch I5 for the purpose of urging the latch in engagement with the pin I1, as will be clearly apparent.
As will be readily understood, the honda may 3 Claims. (Cl. 24-233) be separated or opened as shown in Figure 3, but when the honda is closed as shown in Figures 1 and 2, the jaws I I coact to form what may be referred to as an eye I 9 through which the rope I3 may slidably pass,
. It has been found that the slidin passage of the rope through this eye frequently results in damaging the rope on the abuttingedges I4 of the two jaws, and it is to prevent this damage which, as aforesaid, is the primary object of the invention.
The instant invention resides in the provision of what may be referred to as a protecting insert 20 which simply assumes the form of a plate having a U-shaped cross-sectional configuration and being arcuated to conform to the curvature of the jaws I I, substantiallyas shown.
The plate or insert 23 is pivotally mounted on the aforementioned pin I6, and when the jaws I I are brought into abutting relation, the protector insert 20 covers the line of abutment I4 and thereby shields the rope I3 from possible damage.
It is believed that the advantages and use of the invention will be apparent from the foregoing disclosure and accordingly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention it is to be understood that minor changes in the details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is: I
1. In a honda including a pair of coacting jaws adapted to abut each other, a channel-like insert attached to one of said jaws, the abutment of said jaws being covered by said insert.
2. In a hondaincluding a pair of coacting arcuate jaws adapted to .abut each other and form an eye, a channel-like insert, a pivot pin attaching said insert to one of said jaws, said insert being disposed in said eye and covering the abutment of said jaws.
3. The device as defined in claim 2 wherein said insert comprises a plate having a U-shaped cross-sectional configuration and being arcuated to conform to the curvature of said jaws.
HAROLD V. CROSS.
